There are too many posting categories so I spent a few minutes debating if this goes in the Gloom Looms section or in the Perilous Places section. Ah well, I suppose you'll forgive me if I've got it wrong. Anyways, I was doing a little research on the Dewey Decimal system and found out something rather interesting. The is a real hotel that numbers everything based on the system, it's called the Hotel Library and it is in New York City. Each floor and room have themes (including erotica) relating to their assigned number, related books are available in each room. The hotel was sewed by the copyright owners of the Dewy Decimal system a few years ago. Volunteers wishing to do research of their own: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dewey_DecimalThe Wikipedia article on Dewey Decimal system en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Library_HotelThe Wikipedia article on the Library Hotel www.libraryhotel.comThe hotel's official website, pictures etc here What do you all think?

Very interesting. Handler could have gotten the idea from that. Good job on research Catalyst! Welcome to 667 Dark Avenue!

Wow, that's really interesting. I wonder if that's where Handler got the idea, or if he came up with it independently? It's not so much of a coincidence that some organisation decided to do it, but that it was a hotel...
I'm not sure if this would go in GLooms, or PPlaces, and frankly, I don't feel in any condition to decide right now. Comrade SnicketFires, I leave this open to your judgement.

That's really cool, indeed. Hotel Denouement's interpretation of the system seems more creative, though, with things such as the couch in the lobby being numbered, as well as rooms.

Maybe Handler tried to fictionalize that part of reality.

It sounds like a Snickety kind of place - expensive and full of books. I wonder if DH has stayed there before.

That's really interesting and a great find. It would be interesting if Daniel Handler had based it off that, although it's always best to have these ideas yourself.
I think it would have been a great place for the Book 12 launch. Heh.

Nice. Except for the fact that the Library Hotel is experiencing difficulty...I'd like to find out where it is.

Geez, I don't know why I didn't remember this. I just saw a "Great Hotels" rerun on the travel channel where they go to this hotel a few days before TPP was released. Hmmm, maybe I'm just loosing it.
And Grace of Spades, it's in New York City, by the way.

There's another thread on Hotel Denouement in Perilous Places already (view it here.) But that is more discussion on the ASOUE hotel. Dante, if you feel these threads should be merged, feel free to do so. Also, this Library Hotel sounds really interesting. I'll see if I can visit it when I go to New York City in the spring.

If you can get to the Library Hotel, be sure to take photos and tell us all about it.

Unless you knew that already, which your post seems to contradict.
