Please forgive me if this is in the wrong place - i'm new! I was just re-reading GG. When the fire was started at the V.F.D headquarters in the Valley of Four Drafts, a volunteer managed to throw the sugarbowl out of the window and into the stream, right? So why is it that if the sugar bowl was at the V.F.D headquarters that the secret still remains a mystery to it's members? again, sorry if this is in the wrong place.

It seems that Dewey and his comrade were the ones who saved the sugar bowl at headquarters:
TPP p. 183 "...we're thrown important items out of the windows of our destroyed headquarters, so that they might wind up somewhere safe at sea..."
Who is this comrade? I first thought Kit, but she was in bed. prostrated with grief over Jacques at this point. Also:
TGG p. 284 None of the Baudelaires would ever meet... the brave volunteer who tossed the sugar bowl out the kitchen window...
The Baudelaires have met Kit and Dewey, so the comrade must have tossed the sugar bowl. The comrade could be Lemony himself (if he's not the taxi driver). In fact, that's probably it. He had a "life's work" before starting on the SOUE books, and that's how Dewey described his library work.
If so, we cannot expect a meeting with Lemony in the last book.

That's a good point Rocksunner, I didn't think of that! The way I always thought of it was that the "brave volunteer" perished in the fire, and that was why the Bauds would never meet him(or her).

Of course, the "comrade" could have been any member of V.F.D., and they could have perished in the fire. It doesn't necessarily have to have been the one helping with the catalog.

I agree it could be any volunteer, but Dewey said comrade, singular, not comrades, and listed a whole set of things he and the comrade did on pp. 182-183 of TPP. It looks to me like it has to be the same person helping with the catalog who also saved the sugar bowl. That volunteer might have perished in the fire, but I think Dewey would have said something about it.

I think it's someone that we haven't met yet, and according to Rocksunner's evidence, we never will.

Its just that...how can not a single person the Baudelaires have come across have no idea about it's contents if one of V.F.D's members had it in their hot little hand? Surely, someone must have been able to be contacted and informed of it's secret! Kit Snicket received Quigley's message, meaning she also would have been able to receive some news about the sugar bowl. I'm so confuzzled.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!

The only person who has admitted to ignorance about the sugar bowl contents is Fiona, and that's because Captain Widdershins wouldn't tell her for her own safety. Every other V.F.D. agent they have met probably knew and either lacked time to tell them or wouldn't for some other reason.

How would money exonerate Lemony and bring Olaf to justice? Unless, of course, V.F.D. is resorting to bribery ,and I really doubt that.
