Up until book 12, Lemony is never introduced to the Bauds. He follows them, and is getting pretty close behind, according to the "turn around! I think they've driven through those hedges!" bit, but no one has ever mentioned him to the Baudelaires.
They've met Kit and Jacques, and both have referred to him, but only as "my brother." Widdershins called him "Jacques's brother." Could this be because if they heard his name, they'd remember it somehow?
I personally believe that they do meet him in Book 12, that he is the mysterious taxi driver. Which would probably mean he has the sugar bowl, but that's a completely different story. And I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) that it says that Violet recognizes him or something about him from somewhere. Anyone verify or disprove this? Thanks.

There's a thread about the taxi-driver's identity here, which more people should post in. I don't recall any instances of Violet recognising Snicket or something from him somewhere - possibly you're thinking of something that happened in I think TSS, when she remembers briefly and dimly her parents singing a song, or something like that, which people thought might have been The Little Snicket Lad at Lemony's funeral. Somebody should find a reference for that; it's too late for me to do so here. Or if anyone can dig up what Grace is talking about which I've possibly forgotten or misinterpreted. I agree with your main point (which I've thought for ages, incidentally) - narratively, Handler is omitting Lemony's name because the Baudelaires have heard it, and what they know about Lemony is important. Possibly they know the full details of the accusations of arson against him - that was my idea a while ago, but who really knows? In exactly the same fashion, I believe that Handler has made it so that Lemony's face is concealed from the Baudelaires whenever they see it - in the photograph on page 13 of the Snicket file, for example, and possibly the taxi-driver - because they have seen his face and would recognise it. Maybe from the newspapers - I believe Lemony hides his face because it's well-publicised as the face of a notorious villain.

Is this it? TVV, p. 222 "His full name," Duncan said, flipping through his notebook, "Is Jacques Snicket." "That sounds familiar," Violet said. "I'm not surprised," Duncan said. "Jacques Snicket is the brother of a man who-"
My commonplace book doesn't have any noteworthy...notes on this occurence, though. Just some obvious things that have already been said. I think we had a thread on this, but I can't seem to find it. I did, however find this thread entitled "The Face is Familar" and goes with this topic.
