Sorry for posting so many threads, it's dump day for the things that caught my eye after rereading TPP. Anyone want to make guesses (or tell me, because I'm too dumb to figure it out myself) on who was which J.S. and which was Frank and which was Ernest? Obviously, in chapters 4, 5, and 6, Violet met Frank, Klaus met Ernest, and Sunny met Dewey, but at different times, like which manager locked them in the cupboard (121), etc. My guesses: -Frank was the first manager they met, Ernest the second, and they kept switching off, i.e., Frank gave them the Sebald Code. -Jerome was the J.S. in the basement, Justice Strauss was the J.S. watching the skies, and Olaf was pretending to be the J.S. (the enemy, as Kit said) to lure Remora, Bass, Nero, etc. to the party.

For the Franks and Ernests in Chapter Three: I think Ernest was the first hotel manager, because he rudely refused to tell them about the arrangement of the hotel. The second two managers were the same person, you can tell from the context, and because they're obviously a different person, and they tell the Baudelaires about the hotel's structure, I believe it was Frank. So, Ernest first, then Frank, then Frank.
As for the J.S.s: There's nothing to indicate that Jerome was the J.S. in the basement, and indeed he, like Justice Strauss, was wearing Vision Furthering Devices when the Baudelaires first meet him, so I think they were both watching the skies. Esmé Squalor and her boyfriend (i.e., Olaf) were the ones who invited the teachers, and J.S. invited Sir and Charles. The J.S. who invited Charles knew they'd be arriving by submarine and advised him to be cautious if he wanted to find the Baudelaires. Since Charles is a friend of the Baudelaires, that J.S. was probably a friend, possibly Justice Strauss since she'd have been following the Baudelaires before Jerome started. The J.S. who invited Sir, though, invited him to the cocktail party and told him to bring valuables, the same as the invitations to the teachers said - so that was probably from Olaf or Esmé, or some other J.S. we don't know (I believe there might be another, villainous J.S., although they might not come into B13 at all).
