What does Olaf's tattoo look like, anyway? In the illustrations in early books, it's a conventional oval-shaped eye, somewhat like this: However, in recent books(9 onward), it's described as a VFD insignia eye like the one on Lulu's tent. To confuse matters further, there's a picture in SS that shows Olaf's ankle, and the tattoo is a mirror image of the VFD insignia. This may be proof positive that Handler(Snicket) did not plan the VFD mystery at the start. What do you think about the eyes?

Maybe the VFD was planned from the beginning but DH didn't know that BH could do an eye looking insignia. There's no other reason to mentioning the fact that Olaf had an eye tattoo in TBB.

I assumed that the eye tattoo and all the eye designs were just to add a scary atmosphere, at first. Then Lemony built up a mystery around it and, lo and behold, VFD was created. And then he decided it was an insignia.

VFD was never planned until the fifth book. Handler said in an interview that he just intended Olaf to be obsessed with eyes. He made VFD to spice up the books. Because if every book was like books 1-4, they would get quite boring and this ProBoard would probably not be here.
