I think Handler left the Quags out because he couldn't satisfactorily wrap up their story in the course of one book. Plus Quigley and Duncan might have distracted Violet from being a parent :-)
The more I think about Kit/Olaf the more confused I get. Why would Olaf kill his true love's brother? I wonder if Handler just decided to throw that in at the last minute.

I'm rereading it and is it just me or does he talk about how the bauds story isn't the only one? sortof like he is reassuring himself it was okay to leave all the cliffhangers.

Oh there was a quote about that dress too I think, but I can't seem to find it. Something about a member of the organisation running around in a kitchen in a dress to give the illusion of fire. I got the impression it must have been Esme's dress. I wish I could find the quote. Page 288: " ...and how a crafty volunteer created the illusion of a fire in the kitchen simply by wearing a certain dress and jumping around...I think that Esmé may have changed her flame-imitating dress for a diving suit, which she then modified into an octopus suit, once she boarded the Carmelita between TSS and TGG. In TGG she actually says that the ruby ring she finds that belonged to Fiona's mother would go well with the flame-imitating dress, so she probably didn't get rid of it. The Carmelita was last heard of as having been stolen by Fernald and Fiona, but they, along with Widdershins and Kit, were apparently aboard the Queequeg when they went looking for Hector and the Quagmires. It's not implausible that the Carmelita was wrecked, or abandoned and then wrecked, casting the flame-imitating dress in the sea.

But I read it! It could also be that Olaf didn't want to show weakness in front of his underlings. Especially since Esmé was with him at the time. If he decided to spare Jacques on account of his feelings to Kit, I doubt it would have gone down too well. But in TE he was all alone, and so could act without peer pressure.

Aha, somebody else read my post too! This is fun. Sorry about the insanity... tends to happen to anyone even mildly associated with me - it's an odd effect I have on people. ;D
And yeah, that's a good point about Olaf. I still don't understand why he was so blantanly psychotic in the beginning, with the whole "Call me Kit Snicket" thing. Weirdness.

I think Olaf's change near the end was great. It would have been sucky had he died as his stupid, boring old self. The Kitlaf thing was perfect.

Oh, Kitlaf was both necessary and wowsomely cool. Haha. What a way to end a series. The villain and the author's sister... whoa.

i really didnt understand the part about the ring. Can anyone fill mein? and who the hell is R? R. is the Duchess on Winnipeg. Basically, she is mentioned in TUA and TBL, corresponding with Lemony, as she is apart of VFD. The ring situation was self explainatory, the ring is handed down each generation, and then R. gave it to Lemony who gave it to Beatrice, who gave it back etc. It is hinted in TBL she may be an imposter, yet the coffee stain could be from Beatrice or Lemony, thats for the TBL thread anyway. Stop.

Did any one else notice that, at one point, Olaf speaks of the fortune and Sunny replies, 'Mcguffin.'? It is translated as 'You won't get our fortune,' or something like that, but the meaning of the word 'McGuffin' fits perfectly with the fortune plot. A McGuffin is basically the main plot device at the beginning of the story, but it eventually is sent to the back burner, or entirely forgotten. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mcguffin <<This article even mentions ASoUE.

I know for a definate fact that Beatrice(daughter) grows up but could be older than 6 and less than 10 when she writes the letters. first she can write and she says her bedtime is early. I know they grow up in the city by themselves or with someone and "beatrice", the boat sank probably and she lost the baudelaires but finds them and they help her find Snicket. She doesn't know the signifigance of her ring but she gave it away.

if you look closely at the last picture can you see a '?' in the water? because that's what I've heard, so that can be a clue to a series about the quags By the way, in my copy (the UK edition) there isn't an end picture! Why, oh why oh why oh why oh why? But yeah. I ADORED THE BOOK. It seemed kind of removed from the rest of the series, but that helped create the effect of an ending......... Loved the return of Ink, and the bitter apples. Kit and Olaf!? omg! I really liked 'Book the Last' and Kit and Olaf's deaths were really well done- I liked the fact that the Baudelaires visited his grave. Chapters 13 and 14 were the best parts by far of the whole book, and I absolutely loved Sunny in this one.......... I've enjoyed watching her grow up as the series went on. There's loads of other stuff I loved about this book, but there's too many to write down...... lol Summary: It was beautiful and the best ever!
