Er...could it be about Martin Luther King Jr.?I saw it in a book I looked through. It states how african-americans felt about him, and it kinda is a story about what was happening in all the things he did. If so, here goes
:
One man's life, can affect a whole nation. Martin Luther King Jr. only could live to be 39, but his life still impacts our generation..
Strange was the land, strange were its ways,
Two seeking shelter, entered inside,
Room for them both, yet one was denied?
Two hungry men, with money to pay,
One was served food, one, turned away.
Two on the bus, riding in town, only one was allowed to sit down?
Strange was the land....strange were it's ways..
"I am a man," a young preacher said..."I am no better than my brother, but I am no less than any other,"..."None but God should be set above..all men are the same, in the name of love.."...Where the laws are unfair it is RIGHT to resist, but NOT with a gun, or an angry fist!" He opened his arms, and raised his head.."If there must be blood, let MINE be shed."
A peace ful army arose in the land, hand linked with hand, they TOOK their stand,
Marching, singing, UNAFRAID, no weapon but justice in their crusade.
Cursed. Spat at. Herded to jail! The song and the spirit DID not fail! Beaten. Stoned. Tear gas attack. But the courage, the GLOOORY of being black.
" Keep to the march, keep to the song, keep on resisting where there is wrong! Fight to be equal, FIGHT to be free, but ONLY fight NONviolently,"
"I have a dream," said the man with no gun, "of equality for EVERYONE! Of an end to war and poverty, the poor are a MIGHTY family, brothers and sisters JOIN with me!"
Slowly, slowly, dawning new days, beginning to change the land and its ways, the man of peace, came to know, the HIGHEST honors, the world can bestow, with princes and presidents, ASKED to speak!
....But his heart was with the poor...and the weak..
Took off his sunday preaching suits,
Put on work clothes, and roughened boots.
More than the medal of honor he prized,
Taking his place, with the LOW and DESPISED.
The men who haul trash and garbage away,
Do the DIRTIEST WORK! For LITTLE PAY!
They asked for more, and were denied.
He came to salute them, and walk at their side..
"I am a man" with signs held high,
Together the workers went marching by.
They'd march again tomorrow, and he'd be there.
Now he went out in the evening air...
It was April, the hopeful spring of the year! A light breeze was blowing....NOTHING to fear..
Shots rang out. The murderer fled. The man of peace....fell instantly dead....
The dream of nonviolence, was SHATTERED, and TORN..Could it ever BE reborn?
The people as one VAAST grieving heart...
Walked behind the mule drawn cart(on that part, say it like someone walking
)"I am a man"....
Now he was gone...(get quieter) the dream, and the freedom road...lead on.
Look, I know this probably has nothing to do with your assignment, but I timed, it is 3:37, and it is a point...It's a book called "I am a man" by Eve Merriam. It's an ode.
