The reason Wesley wore a mask, according to him, was that soon everyone would be wearing them. I hardly think That Masked Man would care about fashion.

And I still do, although his logic is, I fear, quite sound. He was extremely classy. And he of course had an excellent reason for wearing a mask: so his identity would not be compromised.
Your discussion of masked men reminded me both of "The Minister's Black Veil" by Nathaniel Hawthorne and of the Phantom of the Opera.
