I definitely agree that Volunteer Fire Department is too obvious to be what it really stands for. Did something in the books lead you to "deleteriousness", or was it just the only D word you could find that made sense?

Deleteriosness is a fancy word for evil or harm, and VFD is a noble orginazation that helps people. They fight deleteriousness. They fight evil.

I still don't think Handler would waste one of the biggest secrets in the series as a vocab lesson. Personally, I could care less what 3 initials stand for, not so important in the overall plot. What they did is important, the scandal is important, and I prefer to find out who's who such as who is the baud mom, and who Mr. Baudelaire is. Handler himself said we'd find out in his interview.

If the initials aren't important to you, why do you spend so much energy arguing what they stand for?

1. The eye insigna--The eye could mean that people are watching and keeping an eye out for possible danger, and are ready to help. 2. OFD--Olaf Forming Deleteriousness? 3. The world is quiet here--the world is quiet, no screaming, no sirens, etc. 4. Firefighting--Firefighting is just one of the things VFD do to make the world a better place, if only a fraction of a fraction of a fraction better. 5. Detective work--Solving crimes, putting criminals to justice. 6. "Thank you for volunteering,"--TSS--I imagined this reffering to the actual VFD, not just Quigley helping Violet climb up the waterfall. It was after the line "...that someone wants to care...and help you." This may not be for VFD, but I looked at it that way, and the VFD is something that cares and helps you. (more coming soon) Now, I know Volunteer Fire Department can fit all that plus more, but: Quigley said it--Quigley has been around the block, yes, but it's book 10, there's 3 more books left, and he said he THINKS that's what it is. If the biggest mystery is revealed in the 10th book then why bother reading to the Exciting End? It's so obvious. My [nonexistant imagenary] 5-year old cousin [whom I made up for the instance] figured it out. What sort of mystery is so obvious, and then "confirmed" 3 books before then end? i agree I looked up in dictonary , graet theory , I never Really Believed Volunteer Fire Department was right........

If the initials aren't important to you, why do you spend so much energy arguing what they stand for? I think we're natural debating foes. He says potato andI say potato, he says tomato and I say tomato...The point doesn't really get through when written, but...

We're not natural debaters. We agree on several topics. It's just that I can't bear to see people believe the wrong thing especially when I've got at least some evidence to prove it's wrong. And, like it or not, this is one of the major secrets in the series and is important to post about, even if I really don't care. I'm not wasting much time and energy, I'm just proving a point.

Jacques, all the evidence you present can be contrdicted. Same goes for everything and everyone, too

I never said it couldn't be contradicted. I just said it was good evidence.

It's just that I can't bear to see people believe the wrong thing especially when I've got at least some evidence to prove it's wrong. But you don't have enough evidence to prove it's wrong, all evidence that you say shows it's wrong could easily be taken as something else. The same goes for evidence you give for your theories... we can contradict it, but neither side is solid. I think it's rather arrogant to say yours are right and all others are wrong... if it turns out you're right, then brag about it after it's published in the series. Until then, don't assume all other options are wrong just because you have some evidence that may be able to contradict it.

I think it's rather arrogant to say yours are right and all others are wrong... . Yes, Jacques: you must learn that the only member here who is never wrong and always right is Swans.

I agree that the actual meaning of V.F.D. isnt really as important as the plot, infact, i have sort of believe that there really is no specific V.F.D. there are so many V.F.D.'s that maybe the letters are just a code, or maybe V.F.D. could be a persons initials (unlikely) but thats just my opinion.

Argh, I never said I was absolutely always right and that all others were terribly incorrect, if some people thought that, well I apologize. And Swans isn't ALWAYS right(runs to a hiding place)
