In my personal opinion, this book takes place everywhere, and nowhere. mean, the Bauds just seem so british, but other charaters, like Esmé, and Carmelita Spats seem American. Uncle Monty strikes me as either British or Austrailian (too much Monty Python and Crocidile Hunter). Jaques is a French name. Gustav, is a bit of a German name, but he had a sister named Sally, which is pretty American. Also, there was a VFD headquarters in the Versailles Post office. Isn't Versailles in France? Also, just a thought, There is no KING of Arizona.

We know. It's just DH being himself. And in Canada we use the dollar sign. No pounds. Does Britain still use pounds? Did they not change to Euros?

Britain does not now use Euros, though other members of the EEC certainly do.

As I've said, I think all the location anomalies were designed specifically to tell the reader that there IS no location for the books . . . rather than make you try to figure it out.

No where. Nowhere. No, it's two words. It has to be. I think they live somewhere, just somewhere that dosen't exsist.

The difference between "no where" and "nowhere" is equivalent to the difference between "no body" and "nobody," only different.
I think I know what you meant, though.

I know that the story takes place nowhere (or no where... quite a fascinating argument) but somehow I think whatever fictional place they live in is based on somewhere in Europe. I always picture most of the characters with British accents. But I agree with Melony, the people like Esme and Carmelita and sadly the rest of the obnoxious characters seem kind of American. And don't give me a hard time about that *ducks Various Flying Doodads* I'm an American so I get to make fun of myself.

Esme, Jerome, and Hector seem glaringly Amerikan to me. I, personally, can see Carmelita as a Brit-- or as a Universal Brat.
For some reason-- don't stare at me like I'm insane-- the Snickets feel like they should come from Sequim, Washington. (Yes, I know I'm the only who's been there. It was a heckuva journey. Three or four thousand miles from where I live. Something like, anyway.) It's got a lot of pine forests, tall snowy mountains, and cow fields/llama farms. Yes, llamas, but it was the evergreen mountain setting and dairy farms that made me feel like the Snickets could've been there.
Esme's a definite New England.
Jerome might be an FFV gravitated North.
Hector's Midwest.
I over-think this stuff. If I had to put Carmelita somewhere, I'd put her in inner-London--anywhere she could pick up a Cockney accent.

Well if it helps, the name Baudelaire is French. The names Sunny, and Violet are American/British and the name Klaus is German or something. Maybe it takes place in the nowhere, Europe..

I think the series takes place in a made up place in Daniel Handler's imagination. If it did take place in a real location, I always imagined the locale would be New England (Boston, conn., Rhode Island, etc.)

i think it takes place in england because in the tenth book it says something LIKE,'' it is different than north america." something like that.just a thought. [glow=red,2,300]I so agree Orli21!! I think England because the Bauds seem very grown up for their ages and seem very proper, you know? That is usually a stereotype of England. ;D[/glow]

But now, lol, I am going back to change my mind and agree with you Melony K Snicket.. . I definately think Lemony blended cultures so various types of ppl. would read the books! [/glow]
