*folds arms* It takes place nowhere and everywhere. The only existing continent it could take place in is Australia.
Mr. Poe eliminated 3 continets in TEE (North America, Europe and Africa I think) when talking about foreign things from foreign continents.
S. America was eliminated when they needed to sail across sea to Peru.
Antaricta is eliminated because it is Antartica.
Asia was in...er...it was...uh...
PS I won't say wrong section, either, 'cuz I made a thread about location in SS.

I couldn't find a copy of Pauline Kael's book at the library.
And I agree, it takes place everywhere and no where. But why Austrailia? Wouldn't New Zealand be a better choice because it has both snow-covered peaks and warm, green lands at the same time? This is basically true about Canada, also.

Australia because there wasn't anything said in the books that exclude it...I think.

BTW, has anyone read Pauline Kael's I Lost It at the Movies? I skimmed it, and I think Handler styled Snicket's TDP writing style after her. There was one review where she kept going I don't understand blah blah blah since blah blah blah which reminded me of Snicket's rant about why should he clap for ballerinas just because they can stand on their toes longer than he can. Plus, it was just some useless information but Kael did a review for this foreign film (I believe it was Japanese). It took place I think around after ww2, and the main character would walk across this barren wasteland searching for fires because fires to the character symbolized life. (i.e. someone would start a fire to keep warm, to cook food). That's pretty cool that that even is a book, 'cause Lemony talks about a book of the same title in LSUA, and it was written by Lena Pukalie which is... an anagram of Paulin Kael!

Actually, it would make sense if the story took place in San Fran because that's where Lemony is from

Yay! I live in Aus! I don't think it's set in Aus, b/c no-one really thinks Australia is as big as some other countries. Nothing much happens here that goes international.
1 thing though. It could be set in central Aus, because it is mainly farm areas, and theres only a few roads.
Unlikily though.

Hmmm... but Handler's born in California, no?
Oh wow... that's the creepiest thing.. California by Rufus Wainwright just started playing as I typed that....
Anyway... I do think DH is from California (someone else said this so obviously I'm not crazy), and swans said (very truthfully) that it said "some North American countries". I'll say what I said before... the spelling is American, the general culture is American, and though I doubt it's precisely set somewhere, DH definitely modeled some of it on the US.

"Some North American countries"
Lol, where there is only two.
Maybe it's just me, but whenever "some" is used, it seems to imply their is more than two...
I still think it's anywhere and nowhere.

I think it takes place in Snicketville. Located near the beautiful Ostentasious Ocean, Snicketville is a wonderfull place to visit. Next time DH comes to town. I'll ask him.

i now have a theory that it takes place in free country, somplace or, no place, some place. face it, we will probably never get a straight answer for where the series takes place because it takes place everywhere.
