Hold on a second, PJ - you don't actually believe that the series is set in Australia, do you? Not really. It would be too weird. All i'm saying is that, short of Mu or Lemuria or Snicketania, Australia is the best bet. I've given enough reasons anyways.

Another clue to a British/Australian-style world is the use of the phrase "a tin of wasabi." The American usage would be "a can of wasabi."
Are there any other British usages people have noticed?

I can't think of any other British idioms in the series at the moment. Also, I'm American and I occasionally call use "tin" to mean "can". So maybe Lemony just prefers the British term, at least in that case.
I'd say that if we were required to pin down the location of the series to a certain continent, Australia is the only one that really fits. But as I've said before, Handler probably didn't intend for it to be set anywhere specific. It's a mixture of times and places.

Europe, reasons to believe this:the title Count is a European nobleman, Klaus is a German name and Baudelaire is French , I'd say maybe Switzerland or Austria or Belgium they speak German and bits of French there

Besides, just because they have a german name doesn't mean a thing. Perhaps they moved overseas of whatnot. And Swiss people speak either french, swiss-german or italian.

The nationality of their names doesn't tell us where they live. If anything, it gives us a clue to their ancestry--although the Baudelaire name is really just an allusion. However, I wouldn't be surprised if this VFD family was indeed related to the great poet Baudelaire, who may have been connected to VFD, but that's another matter.

I dont think the Baudelaires live anywhere that we would know of, although in the movie they all had british accents. I googled hinterlands and it said that it was in Australia, or Iowa, and also in Warcraft 3.

I now believe Australia because
1:They had to sail across the Atantic to get to Peru Cuts out North and South America and Asia
2:Their parents went to Europe (the lost letter in movie) Cuts out Europe
3:I highly doubt they live in Antarctica or the Arctic because theres no snow in the books or movie (except the mountain)
That leaves Australia

I agree with those who say it's set in an imaginary place. Though some of the words that Sunny says (which no one but her siblings can understand) are french or frenchish or if you say them out loud they're french words.

Just because she says French words doesn't mean they are necessarily in France, though. She has spoken Hebrew, Spanish, Japanese, and English as well. Getting back on topic, I'm thinking it's in California, because that's where Handler grew up.
