I don't watch foreign films on a regular basis, even though I really should, so when I saw the super super excellent hilarious charming Les Compéres today, it occurred to me that not only do the French seem to rock at making movies, their tough guys kick ass. (Yes, they do exist--I thought it was a fluke when I saw Jean Reno in Wasabi, but Gérard Depardieu is seriously my new retro hero. At least, I liked him more here than in Jean de Florette.) Basically, Les Compéres is about this stupid sixteen year old who runs away from his home in Paris to join a motorcycle gang off in Nice with his girlfriend. His dad is super stubborn, so his mom calls up two of her former lovers to go fetch her kid (telling them, separately, that they're the kid's father): Jean Lucas, a weird journalist-cop hybrid who beats up like ten different people during the course of the movie and has a big nose, and Francois Pignon, a neurotic-depressive teacher whose hobby is attempting suicide. Together, they fight crime. And try to rescue the boy, even though nobody is quite sure who the actual father is. Anyway, it's great, and I highly recommend it. Plus, one of the bad guys looks exactly like Hugo Weaving. Can anyone recommend me some good foreign films? Especially actions or comedies (I wanna watch La Cage Aux Folles sometime) or action-comedies.

I thought you were too cool to like Gerard Depardieu! *commits suicide* Anyway, my absolute favourite foreign movie is Amélie... and most of my favourites are in french.... like the Asterix movie, which was brilliantly hilarious and not yet released here *pout* You may want to see Au Revoir Les Enfants, or Va Savoir (which lasted 3 hours and made me want to die, but has a WONDERFUL ending scene: the two guys have a drinking on top of a catwalk contest to get the girl, HILARIOUS).

Speaking of Gerard Depardeau, the version of Les Miserables with him in it was the best version ever. Very true to the book. And there was much rejoicing by the purists.
Au Revoir Les Enfants was pretty good... we watched that in French class. I didn't want to rush out and buy it or anything, but it didn't make me want to run out of the classroom screaming, so... yeah.
Spirited Away is really good, too. It's a Japanese (anime) movie. It's really good, probably even for people who don't generally like anime (even my friend's mom, who doesn't like anime, liked it until the end, when she fell asleep and missed the climax and so didn't like it because she missed the important part).

I also watched Au Revoir Les Enfants in French class back in 7th grade. I thought it was really good, although I don't remember all the details anymore.

The main detail I remember is that one kid was named Julian. I remember this because I was a Beatles fan at the time, and John Lennon's son's name is Julian, so I had a spaz.

I don't really watch Foreign films, but here are some that I have seen:
Amelie - It was in French, and I think it's one of my mum's favourites so we had to watch it. I guess it was OK... though she seriously is weird, hehe
Some film in Portuguese - It was Brazilian (and for those who didn't know: In Brazil they speak Portueguese). It was on late one night, I think on BBC3, but I stayed up watching it with my mum as it was an awesome film. It was about this boy -- I can't remember what happened to his parents, but he had to be looked after by this woman who wrote letters for people who didn't know how to read and write (though she didn't send them). He had some ups and downs in his life, and almost got sold to this family who sold children abroad, but the woman came back and they had to run away. Long story.
This Italian film - I only watched half of it, because it got late. It was about some guy -- and he had a daughter. *wow* lol!
Goodbye Lenin - Last year my mum dragged me to the cinemas to see this with her. It was boring; it was about the war between East and West Germany (it was also in German, and there were subtitles) and I guess my mum only wanted to see it at first because it had "Lenin" - some communist - in it. Though she liked it and... I guess it was OK.

Yeah... and the soap won't foam. Basically, it was about a Jewish kid in a Christian school during WWII, I think. And he had to pretend to be Christian and escape the authorities and all... but he was caught in the end, I think.

Last night they showed this really cool Indian movie on cinemax. It was called "Lagaan." It's about these villagers who are challenged by the British officials to a game of cricket. If the villagers win, they don't have to pay taxes (Lagaan) for 3 years. If the lose, they have to pay triple the tax.
It was in some Indian language but with English subtitles, and there were some parts in English (because of when the British spoke amongst themselves.)

But, it is still, like 25.00. STILL. *SIGH* What would we do without subtitles? Have to learn a whole language, that's what. *sigh*
