In the start of LSUA, there was a big funeral for Lemony, but Lemony was not dead. So who was in the coffin?

I think it was just the coffin by itself...or he could've put some heavy things inside it.

I've always suspected that it was a coffin full of sandbags, or containing a wax dummy. What if the coffin contained something plotwisely important, like secret files or a Sugar Bowl?

My theory on the coffin: The VFD put some important item(secret documents perhaps) inside the coffin, and perhaps a mannequin dressed as the dead Lemony. They meant for one of their members to dig it up. At the end of the autobio, we encounter the phrase "I arrived too late, they already removed it". Therefore, I think that Lemony was supposed to find the message or whatever in the coffin, but someone(plural) already removed it(the coffin or its contents). Discuss.

I reckon it was the same person who was buried in place of Den Watts as well. Sorry, I HAD to.

Exactly! It was probably documents. when Lemony said that they already removed it, i think they were talking about the bad side of the schism. cauze if the good side got it, lemony could just go get it from them.

I reckon it was the same person who was buried in place of Den Watts as well. Sorry, I HAD to. -_- I don't think anyone got that though-it's BRITISH show. Actually, aren't they now showing it in US, because- anyway, let's get back on topic. There must be something in the coffin, otherwise the people carrying it would notice. Or, to be honest, considering how dim-witted the adults are in this series, perhaps there's nothing. It cannot be a survivor, or if it is then whoever told the surivior to hide there was silly. People watched as it were buried. They would die in there. I'm not sure if it IS any relevence, but supposing it were, I'd think it were some important VFD files-or the sugar bowl. The only downpoint of that is that a sugar bowl and some sheets of paper won't compare to the weight of a human being. Maybe it were just sandbags, possibely with important VFD things smuggled inside as well. One more thought: back to the empty idea. The people holding it might work for VFD. They might KNOW Snicket isn't in there, but wanted to help him, by making people think he was dead, therefore making people stop searching for him.

thats a good, idea becuase if they were from VFD they probably set up the whole funeral and whatnot.
or maybe they switched coffins, and they got the ones with the files and buried an empty one

This is very weird. I remember the Westing Game by Ellen Raskin. It's kind of like this.
