I'm sure not many of you have heard about this incident. (it would be more local) After the Red Sox vs. Yankees game on Oct 20, there was alot of rioting in the streets. (this happens almost everytime a boston/new england team score's a major victory. The police were trying to calm the crowds. A police officer threw some sort of restraining device (I forget what it's called) and a college student, in the wrong place at the wrong time, was hit by it. She died in a Boston hospital the next afternoon. Today, in the Boston Herald, they showed a picture of her (front page) lying down on the street, dying. Naturally, the parents were upset about this. The editor apologized, but was trying to make a point by saying showing this picture would hopefully make people realize that this rioting is wrong.
personally, the pictures sickened me, and I don't think this will really get across to people.

This is horrible. Here are my notes:
*On one hand she was there at her own risk. *The police officer meant not that much harm. *Officers should be trained to know where to throw it, without death as a result. *The officer should have been more cautious. *The newspaper should have consulted the family first, before they placed the picture in the paper. *The family of the dead woman should sue.
*Whipes forehead* Whew!

Actually, the thing that killed this pioor woman was luck-the device hit at the exact angle it needed to enter her nasal passage (I belive it was the nasal passage) and kill her. A centimeter ot two off and she'd be alive. The cop is completely unblamable.

Yes, a girl is dead, that's very juicy . Let's smile all the time! (That's called sarcasm. See you learned something today 48:14 or whatever the hell your name is) Also, I thought that picture was totally wrong, the person that put that is their paper should be ashamed. Where did that picture come from, any one know? Who takes a dieing person's picture?

When I first read that last statement, I read the whole paragraph again just to make sure Soidanae wasn't being sarcastic. I was very angry when I heard about this story. First of all, the woman killed was an innocent bystander, she wasn't even a riotor! Second of all, the policemen shot the tear gas pellet into a crowd of people. In defense of the policeman, he was aiming at torso height, and when the pellets hit the chest, they usually just cause bruising. However, did it ever occur to the police man that not everyone is the same height? Did it not occur to the police man that some people might duck when they see a policeman pointing a gun at them? Did it not occur to the policeman that they could have possibly killed a baby by aiming for chest height? Honestly, I can't blame anyone BUT the police man.

Really-what would you do in a riot, full of people fully capable of hurting you? Think of every mitigating circumstance?

Bad luck is still a variation of luck Yeah, that's true. But still. I think this discussion is getting a little depressing. But I guess it was destined to...

Really-what would you do in a riot, full of people fully capable of hurting you? Think of every mitigating circumstance? Believe it or not Soidanae, there are ways other then dangerous guns that shoot pellets of tear gas to disperse rioting crowds of people. Water? Tear gas canisters? Both are much more safe then shooting pellets that have been known to cause severe bruising. I don't understand why they even use such dangerous weapons in the first place. When I heard about these tear gas pellets, the first thing I thought about were the many reasons why they are so dangerous. So no, the policeman did not have to think about all the "mitigating" reasons for why it was dangerous. If the police man had any brains at all, he wouldn't have shot it if he had only thought of ONE reason why it might not be such a good idea. I don't know about you, but it scares me that the only death that occurred that night was caused by the people who are trying to keep us safe. P.S. In response to what you said, she was not in the crowd of riotors to begin with (And even if she was, that wouldn't justify her death.) She was standing off to the side, which is why I referred to her as a bystander earlier.

rioting is a problem today and well, if people were more like me, their would be less fighting and more hugging....- tom Grabalsky from Even Stevens.
