The entire build-up of the gesturing conversation as Snicket and Theodora decide who is to carry the beast. I laughed at that part so hard. Brillant comedy writing.

It's not really a quote but I really laughed at the part where Lemony is in the mansion about to meet "Mrs. Murphy Sallis" and he sees a tray with a dozen cookies. He says, "I ate eleven of them, right in a row. It is rude to take the last cookie."
I also found it funny (in the beginning of the book at the cafe) when he enters the bathroom and the man asks if he is all right. He says he ate the eggs and then the man "washed his hands sympathetically and left."
How does one go about washing their hands "sympathetically?" haha I love the little humorous bits like that.

The entire build-up of the gesturing conversation as Snicket and Theodora decide who is to carry the beast. So good. Reminds me of the window scene between the Doctor and Donna in Doctor Who. And I imagined that the whole "draw a 9x14 grid" thing was a little nod to how in comedies, when a woman goes into labor, someone (typically a husband) is supposed to go boil water...a way to get the useless people out of the room I loved the whole library book request code: "Qwerty looked at me, his face as blank as one of those extra pages tucked in the back of a book for notes or secrets. 'So your complete request,' he said, 'is 'Sorry, But I Cannot Meet You at the Fountain.'" Belgian authors and Lemony getting all nervous trying to get the code through. His cleverness shows through, but so does his inexperience.
