# 2 - The Tree
38 years earlier
She only stopped when she reached the gate, unlatched it, and waited for him to run through 'Are you sure it's safe?' she asked him. 'Of course it's safe.' He smiled at her. 'I wouldn't take you there if it wasn't safe.' 'It's just... nobody knows where we are. What if something happened?' He reached out for her hand. 'Nothing will happen. And I know where we are.' He shut the gate, and they ran deeper into the forest. They ran slowly for another few minutes, until he stopped next to a large tree that had gotten tired of standing upright for so many years and decided to fall down. 'Here we are,' he said proudly. '... Is this it?' she said, disappointed. 'Yes. This is it.' But he still smiled. 'When I was really small, a few years ago, I used to come down here all the time with my friends and play. I probably spent more time here than anywhere else.' 'Okay, that is kind of cool.' he smiled meekly. 'No, but that's not why I brought you here.' He walked to the stump of the tree, and kneeled down, and she came and sat next to him, leaning against his shoulder. 'You see these lines?' He pointed at the stump. 'There is one line for every year that tree has been standing tall. That's a lot of years.' 'I want to count them.' 'You can count them if you like.' She reached out her hand and began to count. She reached 29 before she lost count, and he placed his hand over hers as they began to count once more. Eventually, they finished counting. '665.. 666...667. That's a whole lot of lines,' she said. 'It is.' 'That was surprisingly fun.' 'Good,' he said, 'I like fun. But that's still not why I brought you here.' 'Why did you bring me here then?' 'I want to show you something.' He pulled something out of his pocket. 'What is that?' she asked. 'I dont know. I found it in my dad's bedroom.' 'What does it do?' 'I think it.. I think it kills people.' She looked scared. 'Then why have you brought it here?' 'Because i want you to have it.' She stood up. 'Why would I need to kill anyone? I'm not a murderer.' 'I know, I'm not saying that, but.. I just thought you could use it to protect yourself.' 'From what?' 'You know what,' he said. 'The Wolf.' She looked scared. Suddeny she didn't like this place anymore. 'Don't talk about the Wolf.' 'Sorry,' he said. 'I told you,' she said through gritted teeth. 'The more you talk about the Wolf, the more it knows where I am.' He walked up to her and put his arm around her. 'I'm sorry.' She began to cry. 'It's okay.' 'I know it is. You don't have to take it, it was silly of me.' 'I'm just so scared, Hermes.' 'I know, Antenora.'

# 3 - The House
The Bird was watching him, he knew it. It was early morning and as he stepped out of the taxi and paid the driver, the birds were all Willis could hear. It was too early. Nobody should have to do anything this early in the morning. He had been woken half an hour ago by a call from Pandora. She had found something, and she wanted everyone to come and see it. But Willis wasn't too sure what she meant by everyone. Willis wasn't part of LITMUS. He was just curious. Curious to find out who Bowen was. That was all. And once he knew that would be it. He wasn't a part of LITMUS. He wasn't. The location was an ordinary house in an ordinary street in the middle of the city. He looked at the watch. 5.30am. This was far too early. He walked into the house and found the front door was open. He stepped inside, and could hear talking coming from the front room. The first thing Willis noticed was everything. The room was a complete mess, as if someone had decided it was no longer a room but a junkyard instead. The room was filled with such a large assortment of objects that must have taken years to accumulate it all. There were piles of books, chairs, tables, refrigerators, microwaves, baskets, hats, coats, scarves, cutlery, wires, car doors, hatstands, wardrobes, bookcases, television sets, glass cabinets, pillows, blankets, shoes, musical instruments, and a large black cabinet with a broken lock. But despite the numerous items, Willis' attention was caught by something else. Written on each of the four walls of the room in large red letters was the words 'Bowen', 'Bird', 'Wolf' and 'Bee'. 'Well, what do you think?' Willis let out a small shriek. Among the hundreds of items littered around the room he hadn't noticed Pandora and Aang were standing there 'I umm...,' he said, recovering, 'I don't know what I think.' 'I told everyone at LITMUS to keep their eyes and ears open, but it wasn't even necessary.' Willis read the words on the walls once more. 'Bowen, Bird, Wolf, Bee.... what are those?' 'Words' Aang said. 'Who wrote them there?' He went up and touched one of them. 'And what are they written in?' 'I dont know.' said Pandora 'But I think we can assume it was the owner of the house.' 'Whose house is it? Who would live in a house as messy as this?' 'Not all the rooms are this untidy,' said Aang, 'only this room.' 'The house... is Freebird's.' 'Oh,' said Willis, 'I don't really know him.' 'Neither do I.' said Aang. 'We don't really talk,' said Pandora. 'Where is he?' 'Good question,' said Pandora. She walked over to the wall with 'Bird' written on it, and glanced at the various objects piled dangerously high, almost touching the ceiling.' We got a phone call a few hours ago, people were complaining of a disruption happening here. Shouting, fighting... when we got here there was no sign of anything having happened here.' 'So now what?' Wilis asked. 'Now we have to look through everything here,' said Pandora. Aang laughed. 'That will take a while.' 'We need to see if we can find anything to help explain what those words mean, meanwhile I've sent some of our best agents to try and find Freebird as quickly as possible.' 'Okay, cool.' 'Also,' said Pandora, 'I think we should talk to Antenora. I know we said we'd keep her out of this, but... Hermes knew the duchess, the duchess knows who Bowen is, and so does Freebird. We can't talk to the duchess, so Antenora is our only option.' 'What does the Wolf have to do with this?' Aang asked. 'I don't know. I wish I hadn't sent Bandit away...' 'What is Bird?' Pandora opened her mouth as if to say something, but then she closed it again. 'I... umm... I don't know.' Willis looked at Pandora intently. 'Are you sure?' Pandora blinked several times in a row. 'Yeah, I'm sure. We should get to work sorting through this stuff.' 'It's too early,' Willis said, 'I can't be doing this this early.' 'Well that's good then, because you won't be doing this. There's something else I want you to do.' 'What?' Willis asked. 'I want you to talk to soemone,' said Pandora. Aang looked at the both of them, confused. 'Someone?' said Willis. 'Someone,' said Pandora. 'Okay.' Willis turned around and walked out of the room, to the front door, and back down the steps. He pulled out his phone and dialled. He waited several seconds before she picked up. 'Hello?' 'Hey,' said Willis, 'it's me. We need your help.' 'I'm afraid I'm a bit busy. What do you need me for?' she said. 'Well... we wondered if you knew who Bowen is?' 'Ah,' she said 'well, I'm afraid that's something a little too difficult to discuss over the phone, Willis. We need to meet in person.' 'Okay, Sherry Ann. Shall we say coffee at my place, around 8ish?'

# 4 - The Waitress
Sherry Ann was dead. She had been stabbed by a close associate of hers, and she had died. She was currently enjoying her fourth cup of coffee of the morning. 'I'm not sure how long this can continue,' said the man sat next to her. 'For as long as it needs to,' she said. 'His sister cannot be trusted, her spies are everywhere.' 'So why are you meeting him for coffee?' he asked. 'Secrets, secrets.' 'You're full of secrets, Sherry.' 'Tut tut,' she said, smiling, 'my name is Isabella.' 'Oh yes,' he laughed, 'I forgot.' 'Well don't. It's dangerous enough for me to be here talking with you anyway.' 'Then why are you?' 'Because I trust you.' She smiled into her coffee. 'And I know that you'll do what I tell you.' 'So you're saying I'm your obedient revant?' 'Yes.' She laughed. 'You should go, he'll be here soon.' Tiago stood up from the table, and reached into his pocket. 'It's okay, I'll pay,' Sherry Ann said. 'It's my fault for even bringing you back here.' 'Thanks, but it's good for me to come back to the city occasionally. I miss 667 sometimes, all the fun we used to have. Whatever happened to those times?' 'We gave up, Tiago.' Tiago paid for his drink. 'There's no need to be so downbeat all the time.' 'I know, I just enjoy it.' Sherry Ann smiled. 'Give my love to Emma,' Sherry Ann said and thought. She thought about everything, just like she always did. Tiago was one of Sherry Ann's most trusted colleagues, but this was a secret to everyone, of course. All of Sherry Ann's agents had to remain secret, for their own safety. Over the years, many attempts had been on Sherry Ann's life, so recently she had been forced to fake her death and go into hiding, not just to protect herself, but also her friends. But now something had happened that had caused her to come back out of hiding. Something that was walking into the cafe. The something saw Sherry Ann and smiled, and came and sat down opposite her. 'Hi,' Willis said. 'Hey,' she replied. 'So... what do you know about...' 'Don't,' said Sherry Ann, 'not here. Don't mention the name. We don't know who else is listening.' Willis looked around, expecting someone to be standing there eagerly looking over him. There wasn't anybody standing over him, except for the waitress. 'Would you like anything to drink, Sir?' said the waitress. 'Umm, no, thanks, I'm fine.' The waitress walked away, and Willis turned and looked Sherry Ann in the eyes. 'So... what do you know?' 'Many things. But about this case specifically?.... I think it would be better if you told me what you know.' 'Well,' Willis took a deep breath, 'me and Pandora saw the Duchess and she went to Hermes' grave and the grave of this other person called... whatever. And we were trying to work out what that had to do with anything and Pandora said maybe it's to do with Hermes and when the Duchess' mother died, but before we could investigate that, Freebird went missing and... that's kind of it. I know it's not much to go on.' 'It's nothing to go on.' 'Well...' 'Seriously, it's not even a case. Its just a curiousity.' 'Yes.' 'So why are you involving me?' 'Well,' Willis looked embarrassed, 'I would have thought that was obvious. You know everything.' 'Well, Willis, I'm afraid to disappoint you. I don't know who he is. I don't really know anyhting about that.' 'You're lying, Sherry.' 'It's Isabella in public.' 'Another lie,' Willis sighed, and reached into his jacket and pulled out a file. He placed it on the table and opened it. 'You were there when the Duchess' mother was murdered, and Bowen was arrested for murder. So who was it?' Sherry Ann stood up 'We have to leave.' She picked up the file. 'Now.' 'What? Why?' 'We said the name. And that means that it isn't safe to be here anymore. I'll explain everything to you when we get somewhere safe – which isn't here.' Willis sat for a moment, unsure. 'Trust me,' Sherry Ann said. 'Okay,' he sighed, and stood up, and they walked out of the cafe. The waitress waited until they had left before heading out he back exit and taking out her phone and calling her. 'Hello?' she answered. 'It's me' the waitress replied, 'she was here, just like you said.' 'And did they recognise you?' 'No' said Anka, 'not at all.'
