Ten year Ph. D's are not unknown, but yes, quite unusual nowadays. Teachers there will be, but if I remember rightly your field is nowhere near Tragedy's.

The thing here is most similar to what Zortegus said. For some subjects in some places you have to apply, but that only means filling in some stuff (mostly online), and that's only 3 months before the semester starts. Then they take the people who finished high school with the best marks, plus some who have done other stuff for a while after highschool and some special cases like professional sport people or something. For other things you just have to register, and that can be as late as half a month before. It's also free, except in private universities, but there aren't many of those. Many people do move to a different place to go to the university they want, but it's more based on personal preferences and the possible combinations of subjects than any elite image stuff. There is some competition between universities, but it's nowhere near as much as in other countries.

Good for you all!!
I only ever applied to one school and got an early acceptance in October, and the financial situation there was good so I never applied for anywhere else.
Hope the application fees/essays aren't too rough. Hopefully they're not even existant.

Congratulations to the uni-doing people! I have a place in monash for next year. Which I ended up deferring and will probably guiltily let lapse as I don't want to study in the foreseeable future. But it was a hard-won place so it'll be an agonising decision.

Congrats sophie and penne! And did you know Charlie is a fully fledged medical student these days? Crazy times. Edinburgh is a rad city, and I hear their uni is like in the top 10% worldwide. Edinburgh is usually in the top 20 institutions in the world for higher education Congratulations to the uni-doing people! I have a place in monash for next year. Which I ended up deferring and will probably guiltily let lapse as I don't want to study in the foreseeable future. But it was a hard-won place so it'll be an agonising decision. What are you going to study?
