I love Damon but Gorillaz is more than just him you know. obviously, but without the unusual production from their other albums and barely any of albarn's vocals it doesn't feel like a gorillaz album

I love Damon but Gorillaz is more than just him you know. no it's not you're right, if you discount the graphics contribution. and the guests featuring on pretty much every track. if you don't discount those then, you're wrong.

sorry, pep, I still haven't gotten around to listening to the whole album, and only then do I want to form an opinion. but tbh I'm afraid that I won't like it much either =/ Of the pre-released tracks I really only liked Ascension (and Andromeda was ok, but still underwhelming). I'll post something when I'll listen to it whole.
Also I agree that Gorillaz has always been a collaborative project. The thing that hurt Plastic Beach the most imo is that Damon decided to produce it himself, and not collaborate with a cool producer like Dan the Automator on the debut, or Danger Mouse on Demon Days (the songs on PB themselves were actually pretty good). The production seems lackluster on Humanz as well, though.

wtf, tell that to De La Soul on Feel Good Inc., or Del the Funky Homosapien on Clint Eastwood, or Roots Manuva on All Alone, or Ibrahim Ferrer on Latin Simone, or Snoop Dogg on Welcome to the World, or [etc]

Finally listened to Humanz, and yeah, it's a meh/10 :[
My favs are: 1. Ascension (high energy dose w/well fitting collaborator; dig) 2. She's My Collar (pretty cool duet) 3. Busted and Blue (some welcome room to breathe on the record; nice, mellow song in itself) 4. Andromeda (sounds like what would've been a neat B-side in the past for Gorillaz)
I almost like: - Let Me Out (dig Mavis' performance; unfortunately it's underscored by some hacky handclaps) - Charger (Grace Jones is a terrific fit with Gorillaz and the guitar riff's pretty cool; if only the arrangement wasn't so monotone and unvaried)
Beyond that I don't really care. I guess it's what a 50-year old Englishman thinks a modern party/club record is supposed to sound like. Some collaborators, though they have street-cred, sound out of place sometimes (and/or make the song sound like not by Gorillaz, like 'Carnival'). The melodies are mostly pretty unmemorable and uninspired (worst offender is 'Momentz' imo). The worst aspect to me, though, is that p much every beat on the record is this 4-on-the-floor annoying sounding salsa that exhausts me in the first 30 secs of each song (if they were more varied or creative, it could've saved some potentially cool songs, like 'Sex Murder Party' or tthe ones I almost liked).

I was hoping someone would mention the new track 'Sleeping Powder' to avoid a triple post, but also to say that I've been listening to it every other day and I like it better than pretty much all of Humanz.

I saw it come out, but figured it'd be as underwhelming as the most recent album. May check it out given this rec tho!

das fine. personally, I could never get behind the annoying 'parklife' side of blur (particularly that damn song, which was prolly their biggest hit). I love me some 'universal' or 'song 2' or plenty others, but they always had lots of filler on every album, imo.

the only redeeming thing about britpop is that it reminds me of the ricky gervais show
