This is a really good ending, and I agree that there's a lot of potential in AU stories.

This story orgionated from the ending and I worked backwards, which is very unusual for me.
Can anyone work out where, on this forum, the inspiration came from?

I kind of dropped this story then hurried onto the next one, but the reflective nature of the awards have reminded me of something I wanted to say.
So, I had the idea for this story and wrote the first chapter, but tuej I reconsidered deciding not to persure the idea any further. I felt that it was the kind of story that was not really needed. A story about a young female being abused is not really something that needs to be written, especially not in these circumstances. However, I was urged to continue and decided to attempt to write a story about such a topic, but that I would attempt to do so in a way that was not exploitative. Another big challenge that the story had, by its nature, was for me to fight against making Violet a victim and any of the cliches that go with that. I tried to make her not be defined by what has happened to her, to retain a sense of herself as a character and a person even if she herself does not accept that to the case. Anyway, my point is... do you think I succeeded?
And to answer the question from my post above, as nobody else could be bothered, this story was inspired by Dante's last words on this forum.

Hm. I felt my biggest problem with the story was that Violet seemed perfectly capable of going beyond being a victim, bit then highly mutated canon characters (Jacques, especially Quigley) showed up to accentuate it.
Beyond that, I felt like a sort of 'what if' story was surprisingly underutilized in the ASOUE fandom, so it was great for that reason.

It's an interesting interpretation... I think in my head (or Violet's head) I can understand the reasons for that, but I do ultimately think the nature of the plot meant that those reasons where never going to be explored satisfactorially for the reader, at least not without being exploitative.
I do like taking concepts and ideas and twisting them, which is certainyl what i'm doing with my current story. Ultimately I think everyhting I write isn't canon fanfiction, but inspired by the characters, world, and most of all themes of the books.
