Last week I finally stopped wondering what a jost is and what kind of girl would or wouldn't give one like that.
When I was younger I mostly just assumed people were singing English words I hadn't learnt yet. For example I remember hearing that Rihanna and the person she wants to share her umbrella with would still be "heavy threather" when it's raining more than ever, and thinking that's probably a metaphor meaning strong or tough.

I used to think the Friends theme song contained the words 'when your brain starts to thaw' instead of 'when the rain starts to pour'.

i won't say i couldn't tell that Tori Amos was saying "I'm glad you're on my side", but i really wished she was saying "I'm glad you brought my satchel"

after more than a decade, i finally looked up the lyrics to NMH - Oh Comely, and learned that he's saying "it isn't as pretty" .... not "it is a nice bready".

Funny, I listened to that song yesterday for the first time in ages again, because it was a live version with video from the 90s on youtube. I wonder why more indie bands didn't start to incorporate singing saw into their act.

I wonder why more indie bands didn't start to incorporate singing saw into their act. i just watched a documentary about Elephant 6 and it was really well made, but all the old live clips were horrendous, lol. it's a miracle that those bands sound like real music on their records. then when Bill Doss died they all did a show together and they sounded worse than ever. it was like a school lunchroom version of the Concert For George. but there was a clip of Julian Koster playing the banjo with a bow, which was surprisingly dope.

I think most of those bands had a heavy emphasis on studio production like their beloved post-Rubber Soul Beatles, but they didn't seem to get the memo that the Beatles stopped performing live at some point for that reason.
NMH might be an exception to the other Elephant 6 bands (i only know 3 others - of montreal, olivia tremor control, music tapes), in that they're more acoustic and jeff mangum actually has some pipes on him that command the stage.

yeah, the mixing in of solo acoustic stuff is the key ingredient that makes NMH better than the rest.
my unsolicited ranking of elephant 6 bands i've heard:
NMH > The Apples in Stereo > The Sunshine Fix > Olivia Tremor Control > The Ladybug Transistor > Elf Power > Dressy Bessy > Beulah > Of Montreal
