i have one month until i move to france for a(n academic year). apart from passport/visa/accomodation stuffs i feel utterly lost as to where to begin to prepare physically and emotionally.
i feel as though most members on here have lived outside their home state or country. i would be entirely grateful for even a smidge of advice / recommendation, as the last time i did this i was 15 and thus did not have a lot of responsibilities !
i. best / worst experience ?
ii. what do you wish you'd brought before moving overseas?
iii. also any tips for how to gauge different academic structures, because europeans are weird.
ta !

yeah i actually went 5 months without cutting my nails because i forgot to bring clippers. and i had a sort of helplessness complex where i couldn't go buy some. eventually they got long enough that i could cut them with some kitchen scissors that i found.
based on this i think it's clear i'm not in a position to give advice

Before I moved abroad I had an appointment with a moving abroad advice person and she said I shouldn't move to another country just because of a relationship and I'm too young and I will never find a job in the UK if I haven't done years of relevant work experience during university and how dare I focus on anything other than my career. I regret that appointment.

twigz i. worst experience was with my landlord about getting my deposit back. top thing i can recommend is taking enough time beforehand to find a good accommodation (while staying at a hostel). i only got around to it once the academic year already started and by then the best places were taken, so i was left with the scraps, and ended up with a place that was a bit too far away from public transport and my uni. i made it work with a bike, but learned that it wasn't a particularly bike-friendly city. best experience was the girl I met there with whom i ended up taking a trip around the UK, and i really enjoyed all the socials at my uni which helped with meeting people. the campus was great, too, and just living in a foreign place is already very fulfilling. ii. my guitar for the comfort of a habitual activity iii. it's probably all online, so you gotta take notes when they explain it all to you at the start. later on there's still the option of asking IT, but it can be a hassle. emotionally you should just prepare by being excited about moving abroad and making new experiences!

How are you feeling now, twigz ? i have 14 days to go, feeling quite numb really.
because i have adhd my routines are all warped with only a few weeks out of my italian classes, so instead of being happy to be on holiday and visiting all my friends before i move 17,000kms i'm guilt tripping myself about having too much free time and being unproductive...
i don't watch any telly during the semester, but i've been binging random dubbed series in french whilst doing house projects (diy and sewing). trying to not bring any trakkies because (frog) europeans don't like leisurewear, but all of my clothes are baggy so i'm vaguely attempting to tailor some stuff.
as you know mlle. duolingo there's 4 skills in a language and mine are sooooo different, i finished french on the bird app long ago so don't even care to do any "language games", but i used to like memrise for vocab when i was in high school and i'm trying to get back into it. my society does 2 hours a week of conversational practice so i've been dragging my heels twice a week to go see my friends. we did pétanque the other day which was nice. idk if this is a common language thing but if i'm speaking to a second language speaker my french will be worse than if i'm talking to a native speaker in terms of accent/speed.
basically brain rotting in front of the television and i need to do some grammar but simply cannot find the motivation. not wallowing in self-pity, but definitely under stimulated and ready for a challenge. australia is BORING.
my home university does 4 subjects of 6 credit points to = 24CP, with 18CP being the minimum for a full-time credit load. the ECTS european system is 0.75 ECTS = 1 CP so i have to do TWELVE SUBJECTS in france instead of 4 to get all the ECTS transferred. brother...

I can relate to a lot of this with moving in the past, I think if its reassuring how you are feeling is normal and probably experienced by many people on the cusp of a big life change. Sometimes the best thing to do is remember that regardless of the outcome of your move, all things are temporary - it may be the best thing you do, and if it isn't you can change it. Look forward to all the growth it'll bring. Best of luck!

anything cool around where you're going to live? also, europeans hate leisurewear? i've never been to lyon (only 17k kms from me) but it's where the institut lumière is
more so in the southwestern countries - if you wear trackie dacks in public, the french will scorn you.
i have three days until i leave - aaaaaaaa
