Look, I just fail to see how it does anything better than a simple web browser, such as Firefox, and numerous other programs don't do in a...hmm...well, better way.

AOL has extra protection against viruses and worms on the web. Plus it has parental controls, so children won't view anything innappropriate. And it has AIM built into it. And it has an easy access e-mail box. It talks to you when you get mail. "You've got mail!" It warms my heart with fuzziness every time I hear it. So if you say AOL is just as normal as other internet service providers, you need to open your eyes.

So if you say AOL is just as normal as other internet service providers, you need to open your eyes. Extra protection against viruses and worms on the web: How about McAffee? Parental controls: All right, now you've got me started. Parental controls should not be neccesarry. If parents aren't willing to supervise their own children, who will? When parents aren't willing to find the time to spend some time with their own bloody children something is wrong with society. All these "child-protection" devices are worthless. All they do is block some things and make it easier for parents to plop their kid down in front of the T.V. or computer and ignore them. That shouldn't be neccessarry. Kids need interaction with their parents or at least with people, and they don't get that while watching T.V. or using the computer. AIM Built in: It's a free program available to all. 'Nuff said. Talks to you when you have mail: MSN Messenger can do the same thing. Except without the voice. Besides, setting up Microsoft Outlook isn't all that difficult. Quite frankly, it isn't as normal as other ISPs. It's very different. My opinon is that those differences aren't all that great.

So you're saying we should all screw the forum and never go on the internet again?

At the age we're at, parental controls aren't neccesarry. We're capable of thinking for ourselves. At the age controls are neccesarry, they shouldn't be needed.

Where is the parent? Someone that young oughtn't be surfing the web unsupervised.

I used to have AOL and it froze all the time and we never used any of the extras so we got rid of it.

*nods in agreement* We tried AOL for a while, but it wasn't that great. I didn't see anything about it being so much better than anything else... and, we rarely got connected well, so it was awful.
As for parental controls, I definitely see your point and agree with you, Soidanae. Parents really need to take more responsibilities for their own kids, rather than let the computer babysit them, and then complain if something bad happens... and, of course, this applies to everything, not just the internet.

Whenever we went online on AOL it would kick us off.
When my mom was getting rid of it they kept trying to get her to keep it and it took an hour and they made us keep it for an extra month.
