Euro! where'd you go? He has friends in those businesses because he (?) was once trapped in a resteraunt slowly filling with water, so it would be helpful to have freinds in the sponge/pasta industries.

I do! I have an excellent memory cause I can remember this even when I rented an audio for that book from a library months ago.. "If you are a normal person you have an assortment of people you can call on for help. For instance, if a female robber is climbing toward ur window, you might call upon ur mother or father to help push her back down. But the Baudelaires' terrible story began with their parents dying in a terrible fire so they could not call upon their mother or father. If I were trapped inside an Italian restaurant slowly filling with water I might call upon my associates in the pasta and sponge industries..."

That sounds about right. I'm going to read it now to get the page number. *pause* I found it! THH p.7 "And if you were an author locked in an Italian restaurant that was slowly filling up with water, you might call upon your acquaintances in the locksmith, pasta, and sponge businesses to come and rescue you."

P. 1 The Carnivorous Carnival:
Lemony mentions his "few surviving friends", a generalized term. I believe he means VFD members.
And don't forget the Duchess of Winnipeg, mentioned in The Austere Academy, p. 167, as well as in the autobiography.
I have several very good friends in the locksmith, pasta, and sponge businesses, which can indeed be helpful at times.
