Deletriousness seems a little right, but would Handler use a big obnoxious, unpredictable word like that? I know the answer is yes but I still think volunteer fire detectives fits better. Isn't that what he always does? He wants us to have an expansive vocabulary. "A word which here means...." etc.

I know he wants to expand our vocabulary whether or not it needs it, but in any case it would be Volunteers fighting deltriousness, note the s. Jacques said he worked for the volunter- not volunteers- Plus when the bauds were trying to find what it stood for it also said volunteer singular. And another shread close by said Fire Making me believe almost positively that the f is fire.

"There was a shred of paper that said Jacques Snicket worked for VFD which stands for Volunteer-the rest is ripped! <sometime later> this shred just says fire... As we all know each of us have certain associations with words, a word which here means, thoughts that come up even when we don't want them to. For the Baudelaires fire reminded them of.... it goes on and on.

THe Hostile Hospital!! When they're in the unfinished half looking through the quagmire papers. I don't think Handler would use one of the biggest secrets in the series to teach us a vocab lesson.

It may not just be a vocab lesson. It could be a lesson in thinking outside the box. I mean, like you said, it's one of the biggest mysterious of the book. Would he do something measley and obvious like fire, family, detectives or department?

If 'volunteer' is singular, it could always be something like "Volunteer Fighters of Deleteriousness."

I don't think so. Like I said there's a small shred that says fire, and before the schism in the VFD social in LSUA K says that the world needs to remain quiet and extinguished implying fire and the dealings of VFD.

Is it possible to extinguish anything besides fire? After just looking up 'extinguish' in my thesauras, one of the words was 'stifle'. Maybe they wanted to 'extinguish'('stifle') evil. But thats quite a long shot...

Just because a paper said "fire" nearby doesn't mean that's part of the title of the organization. It could always be something different, i.e. someone accused of starting a fire, how to escape a fire, anything like that. And yes, extinguish simply means 'to put out,' it's not exclusive to fires, it could be anything they want to get rid of in the world.

Maybe it could be:
The Duties of a Volunteer Fighting Deleteriousness:
1. fighting fire 2. solving crimes 3. helping the poor
etc

I guess but I still don't think it's deletriousness, I think fire is incorporated into it, literally or not.

I don't think it's Volunteer Fire Department, just because that is what he is making us believe. He wouldn't feed us the answer like that. It's the same way he made everyone think the survivor of the fire mentioned in the Snicket file would be one of the Baud's parents, and then it was Quigley. He made us believe the obvious, then did something no one expected. (this is the exact same reason I don't think Beatrice was Mrs. Baudelaire)
