For Christmas, I got Lemony's calender of unfortunate events. It has stuff written on some days. I found on:
July 13 According to legend, French Queen Marie Antionette, when told that the poor have no bread, says "then let them eat cake."
July 14 Bastille Day Cakeless French peasants revolt against selfish and ignorant queens.
July 15 "Cakesniffing orphans in the Orphans Shack!" -Traditional Prufrock Prepartory chant
See a connection? The selfish and ignorant queen (Carmelita) makes fun of the people too poor to buy cake (the orphans in the shack).

like on Friends when Ross delivers the cookies for the brown birds cuz he breaks the girls leg..near the end this girl calls Ross a: "scrud" ... "ur the nasty man that broke Sarah's leg, scrud!"
i mean we would use "freak" right? or "weirdo" ... ?

Hey, did you all notice in TEE, that while they are eavesdropping outside all the rooms they heard one where a woman with a funny accent said, "Then let them eat cake." Interesting and funny because I knew about Marie Ationette before that.

I knew about that saying too... and a good book about Marie Antionette and her daughter is called the Dark Tower by Sharon Stewart.
Anyway, i forgot about that, i haven't read TEE in forever. Thanks!

I interpreted "cakesniffer" a little differently. To me, it implies not only being too poor to get cake, but being impolite enough to sniff at other people's cake. It's considered impolite to sniff food that isn't yours, especially at formal parties. So "cakesniffer" means "an impolite little brat". Like Carmelita. How deliciously ironic.

Spam... I thought we had figured it out...or I've heard that theory before. But well done on getting evidence on it. About that woman with the funny accent-most people in the series with odd/foreign accents seem to be in V.F.D. Perhaps someone in the Spats family, for a wild guess. |
