I thought it was in England only because I love it, and I wanted the Baudelaires live in a good countrie, at lest a good place in their terrible lifes.

I think it takes place in a fictional city loosely based on places DH has been.
I mean, honestly, have you ever been to city with an entire district dedicated to fish? I doubt it's real.

Actually, there are places with districts entirely dedicated to fish. But they are entirely in large fishing communities.

True, but I still don't think the city is based on a single real place.

I wouldn't be surprised if Snicket was satirizing such places; there's also mention of meat, flower, and sculpture districts.

;DI think it takes place in either New Zealand or Canada, because that's just how I am.
Now that I think of it, I do think it would be in england. Or Ireland!

I always imagined the series to take part in Britain, because there are some British aspects of the stories. It is probably set between 1930-1950. In TEE when talking about xenophobia, Jerome says something to Sunny, asking her if she would be afraid of a mountain Lion that lives in North America. If the series was taking place in North America, I don't think Jerome would've referred to it like this. Canada is perfectly possible though.

Don't know, I just can't stand this ideia. I like Canada, but the stories just doesn't seems to have a Canadian, how can I say, "style". I also like your ideia of decades, too.

I'm still convinced that it is a completely fictional place, but if it were a real place, England seems likely.

andressa Thankyou! And I agree, although Canada is possible, there isn't much of a Canadian feel to the stories. I'm Inclined to agree with Sophie Baudelaire, I think Handler/Snicket didn't want us to think to much about a certain location and just wanted us to enjoy the atmosphere. I don't think he specifically "set" it anywhere. EDIT: In TCC Violet calls the operator- they had operators for telephones up until the 1960's. Also in THH Lemony mentions on page Ninety that he likes to watch the Northern lights......and the Northern lights take place in the north.....so.......

Hey, here's a theory... maybe it's a fictional story that takes place in a fictional place.

I believe it takes place no where and is completely timeless. Where and when it takes place is insignificant to the story and makes the writer be as creative as he wants. Strange designs and mixed technology. I think its great and never want a place or time to be revealed

Hey, here's a theory... maybe it's a fictional story that takes place in a fictional place. I get the sense that that is what Handler was implying, it's better not to sticky label locations to the books and just enjoy the series in my opinion.
