Was at a Fontaines DC concert in the last week - one of the top 2 shows this year for me - and been listening to their first album "Dogrel" a lot.
There's been a proliferation of speak-singing bands lately, but their singer does it in a very natural-sounding way, I think.

listening to the best motown album, The Supremes - Where Did Our Love Go. this is a truly incredible album. when i hear one song from it i must hear the whole album again. a lot of girl group singers sounded like they came straight from their high school talent show, but 20-year-old diana ross sounded positively seraphic.

the title track of the record is so nice. i remember the band cults shamelessly stole that track as "you know what i mean", lol. I've developed a noteworthy affinity for 60s girl groups ever since watching goodfellas & mean streets in my teens. the supremes are great; i love all the classic groups, particularly the ronettes & crystals. the tammy's "egyptian shumba" is also a fantastic recording that veers on novelty tune and yet is also very proto-punk.

phil spector's groups are their own cool thing, but his sound has aged in a kind of alienating way, and much of his songwriting ranges from sophomoric to creepy. my particular love is for the pre-british invasion motown sound, and the songwriting of HDH and smokey robinson. the guy groups like the miracles, the temptations, and the four tops are almost as good as the girl groups, but The Supremes and Martha & the Vandellas have something special about them.

MJ's Dangerous album is so insane. it's as much a "new jack swing" album as Remain In Light is a "funk" album. the grooves are such an airtight assault of thrilling sounds that they often transcend dance music and just leave you fixated. and while MJ's mannerisms had always leant his voice a certain "possessed" quality since Off The Wall, the mix of supercompressed vocals and elevated lyrics here definitely bring his performances to a new level of eerie, unearthly, paranoiac distress. though his social message is ultimately naive and cheesy, that absolutely isn't evident on the surface (as it often is on Bad) especially when he's growling angry satire like "I told my brothers don't you ask me for no favors / I'm conditioned by the system, don't you talk to me." even the love songs don't have a trace of innocent joy, instead he's got lines like "I am the agony inside the dying head."

This is my favourite MJ album
