ambivalent words about A Hard Day's Nightat the moment, though, i'm listening to "You Can't Do That" on repeat. definitely my favorite on the album, and the first in a line of John B-sides that demolish the Paul A-side. every time i hear this song i can't help but think about the dynamics between John and George at this stage. George said at the time that it was his favorite song they had done. in fact, i believe this is the first Beatles song without George doing the lead solo. clearly George had retained a boyish admiration for John's mean-guy posturing, as he also called "Run For Your Life" a favorite the next year. but John's solo on "You Can't Do That" does have a personality to it that George could not have replicated at the time. it is primitive, but has nothing of early George's apprehensiveness. it even reminds me of a Neil Young solo, in a way. John also brings back the same sound for his bit in "The End." the backing vocal is probably their most delightful performance in the snotty style. it makes "I'm Down" sound like a ballad. it sounds like they're sticking their tongues out while singing. George stands out as particularly zealous, but Paul takes over brilliantly when it comes time to howl "THEY'D LAUGH IN MY FACE!" obligatory shoutout to Ringo's slouchy drums. the sheer amount of SAUCE in the cowbell is unaccountable. that was mostly a codeword for pitchfork. my favorite to least favorite beatles writing goes: 1 mole-like biographers 2 inveterate septuagenarian beatlemaniacs on facebook fanpages 3 scattered remarks from other artists 4 my posts on 667 5 youtube comments 6 rolling stone lists (have never actually read one) 7 two-bit literary musings à la Murakami or Knausgard.

Diary Of A Wimpy Kid Cabin Fever. Also, I read "The Returner" as "The Retainer."

^GTFO. this is the one semi-active music thread we have, there's no room for your Jeff Skinny BS.
i'm listening to Lana Del Rey - Born To Die. it holds up, motherjeffer. it's so deliciously camp. i just realized how similar it is to what The Weeknd was doing at the time.

just discovered Happy Rhodes. she is kind of godlike. her voice is like mercury. and she has the most hideous album covers i've ever seen <3 do yourself a favor and listen to Rearmament (1986) or Ecto (1987)

Dirty Diana is the best gynophobic meltdown on wax. from the defiant cry of "you won't seduce me!!" to the whimpering throughout of "no... oh no... no..." and the tacky guitar-shredding over MJ's shrieks. so hilarious, and also an anthem for us vulnerable young fellows. begone, succubi !

i have struck Hard Bop Gold with the string of early '60-'61 albums by the quintet of Johnny Griffin, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, Junior Mance, Larry Gales, and Ben Riley. really hardhitting stuff that has given me two right feet.
