I vote watchable. I don't really have high expectations for the movie. But at least I will be able to hear Jude Law's wonderful accent.

Yeah, big budgets galore. There is no way Jim is getting paid that much!!! Oh well. ^_^
If you voted watchabel, it should be for the sets too, because the sets look fantastic. The movie is sure to be eye candy, and has top-notch talent (means no bad acting here!), but whether it will be a good movie or not is up to whomever watches it. I think it will, I hope.

...i dont know how they transformed the city of Boston to that. Easy...they didn't. Almost all of the film was shot on soundstages. If they were doing location shooting in Boston, it was for some exterior shots, but even then it's not guaranteed. It's been written that even Briney Beach and Damocles Dock were built indoors.

How could the movie not be could with Daniel Handler writing the screenplay.

They could easily have it so Daniel Handler didn't write the screenplay.

Handler wrote the original screenplay, but its been through many rewrites and has changed dramatically sunce then.
yes, all of the movie (if not jsuta bout all) was shot on soundstages and indoors. Briny Beach and Lake Lachrymose were both shot in the same tank, too. Kinda hard to explain, Im not sure I understand it myself.

They were? Hum. I'll be sure to look for that when I watch the movie.
But why would they change it so much? Daniel Handler knows what he's doing. ...Right?

What I hear tell, the original screenplay was pretty embarassing. Didn't Count Olaf talk to a hand puppet in it every few minutes? I know there was a thread about this somewhere.

You might be thinking of the alleged puppet show that would portray the events of book 2 in ten minutes. Anyway, I'm not sure what the screenplay was like originally, but Daniel Handler was involved in the writing at some point.

Actually, yes, Count Olaf (in the original screenplay) did talk to a hand puppet taht resembled himself, and there was a puppet show for the whole RR sequence. And it was HANDLER who wrote that. People are complaining about the changes made now, but if that had been the movie, some of the 667 users would be on the news for throwing themselves off bridges.
If you try to notice that those two sets are in the same tank, you wont. It was set up in a way that...well, its kinda like a reversable hat or something. Hard to explain, but you wont notice it at all in the movie.
