Violet had been frozen in shock. "Allegra...." she said, "Do you know if one of our parents is.... alive?"

Klaus had been entertaining that same notion, but hadn't dared to say it.

Allegra shrugged. "No one's heard from them for a year. But I do know that before the fire, they were being trailed by a three members of Olaf's troupe. That's why he had to cast you in the play, to make up for the lost actors. Don't worry, though," she said, putting a comforting arm around Violet's shoulders. "The minute they know for certain the coast is clear, they contact us."

"That's not right, is it? He put us in the play to marry Violet, right?"

Allegra nodded. "That was the other reason. Olaf hates holding auditions, so he assigns the roles to his troupe. He was running out of cash too, so he decided to fill the roles and steal our fortune with one fell swoop."

"Oh. Okay. I'm so confused about all this, though."

Sunny had been quietly absorbing all the information, and as she attempted to sift through it, she became confused as well.
"I wouldn't expect you to understand it perfectly. Try writing it out in a notebook or something, it helps." Allegra said.

Klaus pulled out his commonplace book and began writing furiously.

Allegra looked at the clock. "We'd better go, supper is in five minutes." She led them down several hallways, emerging into a huge dining hall with clear windows that showed tropical fish swimming by.

Klaus was forced to stop writing and concentrate on not bumping into anything. "This place is crowded."

Sunny was crawling betwee feet. "Tudit." *You said it, bro.*
Allegra took Violet's hand, who in turn took Klaus's, who picked up Sunny. Allegra led them to four seats facing the windows. As they sat down, a triangle rang at the far end of the room.

With a pang, Klaus remembered a volatile girl with triangle glasses. He brushed her out of his mind and focused on the present.

A man was standing at the far end, in the uniform of a colonel.
"This is a very militaritic association," Allegra whispered to her siblings. "I might have told you that before."
The colonel spoke. " Captain Allegra Baudelaire?"
Allegra stood. "Yes sir?" she said, swallowing nervously. She hated public speaking.
"I believe you have some guests?"
"I do, sir. These are my newly found siblings, Violet, Klaus and Sunny Baudelaire. They were finally able to rid themselves of Count Olaf long enough for me to bring them here. I remember how kind all the operatives were when my parents were reported missing, and I hope that you will show that same kindness to my siblings." She sat down, willing her hands to stop shaking as the room burst into applause.

Klaus saw the distress in Allegra's face, and smiled warmly at her.

Allegra smiled back. "Sorry. I just really hate public speaking. But, it's part of the job."
