Here was mine:
Count Olaf had thrown her into the dark foreboding dungeon without checking her pockets. Claire was grateful, since she believed that the items she had could potential help with her escape. With Count Olaf in the other room, counting money, she took a gander at the items in her pocket. With her were two small pieces of lithium she had examined in the battery factory, ¼ empty water bottle she had taken with her in case of an emergency on her trip up the Mortmain Mountains, a hairpin she had used to unlock herself from Duke Dante’s car trunk once, five gold coins that were given to her by a mysterious cloaked man in a taxi, one medium-sized emerald given as a gift to her from a friend whose wealth was in emeralds, and two metre-long shoelaces from some old shoes she once wore. She took a look at the items and thought deeply about what to do. Suddenly, a man came from out of the shadows. Claire turned around, hiding the contents in her pockets behind her back. The man looked suspiciously at Claire, but said nothing and walked away. Claire, relieved, went back to planning her escape.
First, she determined that the hairpin was just the right size to pick the lock in the cell. Unfortunately for her, she fumbled with the hairpin, it fell, and rolled too far away for her to reach. “Drat!” Claire muttered to herself. “There must be something else…” She looked at her other items. Nothing inspired her. How could two small pieces of lithium, one water bottle, gold coins, an emerald and shoelaces possibly help her? But then, an idea dawned on her.
“Lithium…. Lithium… what do I know about lithium?” Claire pondered. She recalled all her knowledge of the chemical. She knew that if it was exposed to air, it would be highly flammable and explosive. (The lithium was in a protected tube.) That would be helpful to her, but she didn’t think that blowing up her cell along with herself in it would be a good idea for an escape. The water bottle was automatically deemed unworthy of the escape plan. The gold coins and emerald would be useless to her in trying to get out of the cell, though its use as a bargaining chip was possible. The two metre-long shoelaces were the only possible choice.
Claire tried to think of how the shoelaces could get her out of her situation. She started to tie the shoelaces together to make a long strand of shoelace. Then, she tied a gold coin on the end of one of the shoelaces. She threw the shoelace out to the hairpin and used the shoelace and gold coin to shovel the hairpin back to the cell. It took some time, due to the weakness of the string and the crude way she created the “shovel” but eventually, the hairpin came back to her.
“Got it!” she grinned. She then used the hairpin to successfully free herself from her bondage. But how to escape without notice? She tip-toed her way to where a guard was stationed. She decided distraction might be the best way to escape. She threw one of the gold coins across the way in the opposite direction. The guard, greedy for the gold, automatically got up and went to pick it up. Claire hurried along, passing the guard undetected. She started to sneak away, looking behind at the greedy guard. Little did she know Count Olaf was directly behind her.
“Hello… hello… hello… What have we here?” Count Olaf snickered.
“Listen!” Claire panicked. “See this beautiful rare emerald? You can have it and these four gold coins if you let me go!”
“Why settle for a measly little emerald and gold when I can have so much more by inheriting your fortune?” Count Olaf countered. He started to go for her arms to bind them, but Claire was too quick. She took out the water bottle, opened it, and splashed it in his eyes. The distraction was just enough for her to escape.
“Get her!” Count Olaf yelled while trying to get the water out of his eyes.
Claire panted as she ran with all her might. She clomped down the spiral stone staircase and ran through the large oak door. She paused and took out the lithium bottles. She threw the bottles behind her and ran for her life. She didn’t look behind her as she heard a large boom, she only ran faster. She finally stopped to rest after she was about a mile away. She looked back at the fortress on the hill. It was engulfed in flames.
“But how?” Claire exclaimed. “They didn’t set it on fire on purpose… did I unintentionally start the fire?” She recalled the properties of lithium and remember that it was highly flammable. She hadn't meant to set the fortress on fire, she only meant it as a way to slow down Count Olaf and his associates. She watched in horror as the fortress’s roof caved in.
“Perhaps Vince was right,” Claire whispered softly to herself. “Maybe Ambiguity had the right idea…” She turned thoughtfully and began her long road back to Ambiguity Headquarters.
