A Succession of Ill-fated Events Book the First The Demented Doctor
Chapter 1
"Would Isadora and Duncan Quagmire please report to the principal’s office," said a voice that the Quagmires never thought they would hear so unexpectedly. The Quagmires were triplets. They also had a brother named Quigley, but today he was home sick. Isadora, Duncan, and Quigley lived in a big mansion with their parents who were the proud owners of the famed Quagmire Sapphires.
Little did the two triplets know that sitting through the class taught by Ms. Sebald was the best thing that would happen to them for a while.
"Come on Duncan," said Isadora who was very relieved that she no longer had to pretend to be interested in the lesson when she was really writing couplets about the boy she was crushing on. Isadora loved couplets and someday hoped to be a great poet.
Duncan answered only with a swift nod of his head. He was upset he was leaving class. They were discussing a very interesting topic and Duncan had been furiously taking notes. Duncan was an excellent researcher and dreamed about becoming a famous journalist.
Quigley might have been sick that day but sure enough he was doing what he loved to do most, draw. Quigley hoped someday he might be the most revered artist ever. Unfortunately this hope never came true.
*** The Quagmire Triplets found themselves in the office of the principal of Eleanor Middle School, Mr. Alva. The principal was a large man with a full head of thick red hair. He wore a blue suit with a bright yellow tie and two shoes with a small picture of the Mona Lisa on each. He was often made fun of for his choice in clothing.
"The principal will see you now," said the unsteady voice of Mrs. Tomas, the secretary.
"Hello Mr. Alva," said Duncan in a polite yet worried tone," What did you want to speak to us about?"
"There is no easy way to say this," said Eddie Alva (Mr. Alva)," there has been a terrible fire in your mansion. There is only the possibility one survivor, because only two of the three bodies where found."
The Quagmires burst into tears when they thought of their home busting into flames.

Chapter 2
As you may have guessed this event was very tragic for the two remaining Quagmire triplets. Making it easy to tell that the Quagmires cried harder then ever before when they saw their once beautiful home reduced into rubble.
"Duncan, Isadora, a few things did survive the blaze," said Mr. Alva hopefully," We found a slightly charred picture of your family, a sketchbook owned once by Quigley, and a letter written during the fire."
The letter was short and slightly burnt but as still meaningful as a college graduation. The letter read as follows:
Dear Isadora and Duncan,
I fear this is our last chance to contact you for there is little hope of escape. Before we pass on there is something I need to tell you about your father and I and VFD.
From there on the paper was torn could not be read.
"On the bright side," started Mr. Alva
"Bright side!" screamed Duncan becoming more and more angry," There is no bright side! We have no parents, no home, and our lives are ruined! How is there a bright side!"
"Well you do have a home and a parent. We found a relative of yours who is willing to take care of you. Your aunt Georgina Orwell. She's an optometrist."
The Quagmires looked at each other in relief.
"Where exactly does she live?" asked Isadora.
Mr. Alva thought for a moment." I don't know exactly," he said." I'll find out for you before I send you to her home."
Isadora sighed, and took out her black notebook, which she used for writing poetry." Duncan," she whispered to her brother, "we need to find out everything we can about VFD and the secret our parents tried to tell us before they died. It's our only hope of finding out why our lives are so terrible."
"Yes, Isadora," agreed Duncan, after making sure Mr. Alva was out of earshot." I'll write down everything we find out in my notebook. Who knows, maybe we can even find out what VFD stands for."
"And don't forget, one of our parents is possibly alive," she reminded him quietly.
"It doesn't necessarily have to be one of our parents," Duncan argued." Mr. Alva didn't tell us WHOSE bodies were found. Maybe we can ask him when he comes back."
"I don't care who it is as long as there is a survivor," she murmured.
Mr. Alva came back at that moment, carrying a notepad.
"I've found out your aunt's address," he grinned." She lives-"
But Duncan and Isadora were no longer listening. They were scribbling in their

Chapter 3
As you may have guessed the well-meaning yet sometimes intolerable Mr. Alva decided that it was not necessary to escort two fully capable thirteen-year-olds to the home at which they would now live, when he could just throw them onto a train and send them straight to Paltryville. Of course this was just an excuse to no have to deal with the orphans who were still mourning over the loss of their parents.
“Oh Duncan,” said Isadora,” I cannot stop mourning over the loss of our parents.”
Duncan thought to himself,” Me too.”
Then came the only sentence Duncan and Isadora could rely on for a long period of time,” Next stop, Paltryville!”
Chapter 3 (continued)
Duncan pounded on the door of the giant eye shaped office of Doctor Orwell at 833 Very Friendly Drive.
"Isadora, did you notice...," began Duncan, but before he could finish the swung open.
Before them stood a thin woman in an open, white lab coat that ended just past her knees. Underneath the lab coat the woman with auburn hair wore a pink, long sleeve shirt with a black skirt.
"Hello," the woman said," My name is Nina Nelly. What can I help you two with today?"
"My name is Isadora Quagmire and this is my sister Duncan," Isadora said as she pointed to Duncan," Is Georgina Orwell here. She is supposed to be our guardian."
"Oh Quagmires," said Nina in a sorry yet still cheerful way," I heard about your terrible loss and I'm sorry, but Dr. Orwell is on a house call at the lumber mill across the street. I the meantime would you like some cookies?"
"Cookies sound wonderful!" exclaimed Duncan. For once the Quagmires felt truly happy until they saw the inside of the office.

Chapter 4
You may think that all doctor’s offices are the same, but Dr. Orwell’s office was not quite as the Quagmire orphans originally depicted it. On the walls there was a horribly vile shade of green but that was not what made the stand as still as a board. It was the gigantic picture of a strange symbol, a symbol that would haunt them for the rest of their young lives. That symbol was the one that would not only ruin their lives by me and my sibling’s live too that symbol was V.F.D.
“Well what is the matter with you two?” questioned Nina in her cheerfully sweet way,” you act like you’ve seen a ghost!"
“Th-th-that symbol!” Duncan managed,” It says V.F.D.!” He then proceeded to make a shaky sketch of what he saw before him in his dark green notebook.
“Duncan, do you mean that horrible sign?” asked Nina cheerfully yet slightly annoyed,” That is just a giant mural that has been here since Dr. Orwell and I started working here. Why I remember…” As Nina trailed off into a memory with a pointless and untrue moral Duncan and Isadora took notes as they remembered what the note their parents had written them said-there is something I need to tell you about your father and I and V.F.D.
“Anyway, what I’m trying to say is that you should always follow your dreams and they will come true!” said Nina in an excitedly, cheerful way.
“Is that really true?” questioned Isadora as if she had been listening instead of writing couplets of information,” Because I was so impressed by your story that I wrote a couplet about it. Would you like to hear it?”
“That would be ever so lovely!” said Nina almost busting with excitement and cheerfulness.
“All your dreams will always come true, No matter who you are or even what you do!”
Both Duncan and Nina Nelly gave this a standing ovation. Duncan, because he was so amazed his sister could come up with a couplet so false so fast, and Nina because she thought that someone had really taken one of her memories to heart.
“Nina,” asked Duncan,” Do you happen to know what that symbol means?”
“I’ll tell you, but do not under any circumstances tell Dr. Orwell that I figured it out,” warned Nina in a slightly less cheerful way,” V.F.D. means…”
“I’m back,” said an unpleasant sounding voice compared to Nina’s.
“Hello Dr. Orwell, said Nina in a voice that almost seemed to be the complete opposite of Dr. Orwell’s,” These are the Quagmires. I believe that you offered to take care of them until they become of age to earn their enormous fortune.”
“Poor dears,” said Dr. Orwell in an easily comprehended fake voice of sadness,” I’m sorry about your loss,” This fake sadness was then changed and became a fake tone of excitement,” Tonight why don’t we all go out to eat to celebrate me being your new guardian!”
Ill-fatedly this dinner did not turn out how it was foresighted to be.
“Nina,” said Dr. Orwell,” why don’t you come too!”

Chapter 5
“Orwell table of four,” said the man at the podium in the Mort Café,” right this way please,” The Quagmire triplets, Nina Nelly, and Dr. Orwell followed the man to a large round table with six chairs.
“Order anything you want,” said Dr. Orwell,” It’s on me!”
“That is so nice of you!” said Nina beginning ever cheerful,” Dr. Orwell, thank you so much!!!”
“Yeah Dr. Orwell,” said Isadora kindly, being polite and thinking that this was a kind gesture at the same time,” I can’t wait to try some of the Mort’s delicacies!”
“Oh, Isadora, you and Duncan can just call me Auntie G,” corrected Dr. Orwe-I mean Auntie G,” Doctor Orwell is too formal.”
“I’ve got to go to the bathroom,” said Duncan jabbing Isadora with his elbow to get her to follow his lead.
“Yes, and so do I,” lied Isadora.
“Okay,” said Auntie G,” But make sure you’re back before the waiter gets here.”
Duncan and Isadora walked toward the restrooms, but before they got there Duncan pulled Isadora into the janitor’s closet to have a private conversation.
“What’s up Duncan,” asked Isadora.
“Did you notice the name of this restaurant?” asked Duncan.
“Of course I did there is a giant sign with neon letters outside. It said Mor-“
“That is not what I mean at all! The word mort, mort is a root word that means relating to death. Weren’t you paying attention during that last day of Mrs. Sebald’s class?”
“Yes, but I guess I didn’t catch that part. Wait, does this mean that Dr. Orwell brought us to the death café!”
“That’s not all. Did you happen to notice the name of the road that Dr. Orwell’s office was on? It was Very Friendly Drive! V.F.D. Isadora V.F.D.!”
“What are we going to do Duncan? If we eat any of the food here then we might die!”
“I’ve got it! We can protest that I am sick and that I threw up in the bathroom! All you have to do is follow my lead.”
“We have a plan and that’s what we’ll do, You can do it Duncan It’s all up to you!”
"Auntie G! Oh, Auntie G, Duncan threw up in the bathroom!"
"Oh! Is he ill?" Nina asked, looking concerned.
"That's none of your concern, Nina," snapped Dr. Orwell, standing up and walking towards the bathroom." Duncan! Are you okay?" she called, trying to peer into the bathroom.
"Yes," gasped Duncan, flushing the toilet quickly even though there was nothing in it, of course." I'm okay."
"Are you sure you can come and eat, Duncan?" asked Isadora.
"I-I-I don't think I can hold it down," said Duncan it in a sick desperate voice.

Chapter 6
“Oh, Duncan honey,” said Nina worriedly and yet in a way still cheerful as she put her hand over Duncan’s forehead,” You’re burning up. I think you have a fever.”
“Poor dear,” said Auntie G in another one of her fake voices,” Nina, would you be too upset if I said I needed to take the orphan-I mean triplets home? We can always do this again another night” after hearing this both the triplets gave a silent sigh of relief.
“Oh, Dr. Orwell,” said Nina in an apologetic and still somehow cheerful voice,” If Duncan is truly sick then of course you need to take him home!”
***
On the car ride back to Auntie G’s house the Quagmires pretended to be asleep to see if their aunt would reveal anything about the many mysteries that surrounded their lives at that moment.
“That bratty orphan could not have had a worse time to get sick! If I would have been able to get them to eat some of that food then I would be the proud owner of the Quagmire sapphires! Not only that, but I would have been able to rid myself of that idiotic assistant of mine! When I was back in V.F.D. I never had these kinds of problems, but now how am I going to get my hands on those orphan’s fortune!”
***
Late that night Isadora decided to do a little snooping. She snuck into her Auntie G’s room and went to work. Isadora looked trough drawers and boxes until she found exactly what she was looking for, a hat box full of old photos and letters having to do with V.F.D. along with a disguise kit.
Isadora entered Duncan’s room and closed and locked the door tight behind her.” Duncan,” she said quietly,” Duncan, wake up.”
“What is it Isadora?” said Duncan quiet and drowsy,” Why did you wake me up?”
“Look at what I found. Hurry; help me stuff some of these old papers into our pockets. They’re all about V.F.D.”
“Alright, but we better hurry!”
The Quagmires stayed up for hours stuffing anything that seemed important into their pockets and suitcases.
“Now,” said Isadora solemnly and breaking into tears at the same time,” It appears that Dr. Orwell wants to kill us to steal our fortune. Our only hope is to take this kit and our luggage and go to Nina’s house. We will have to tell her and even if she does not believe us we have to leave Paltryville.”
“But if Nina doesn’t believe us,” asked Duncan,” Then who will take care of us?”
“I guess we will have to take care of each other at least until we are able to contact Mr. Alva.”
“I guess you’re right Isadora. We better go and get this over with,” said Duncan shedding a few tears.
Little did the Quagmires know that making this decision was one thing that turned the Quagmire’s world upside-down.

Chapter 7
“Why of course I believe you, Duncan!” exclaimed Nina in a cheerfully angry voice after she heard the story about Dr. Orwell, the Mort Café, and finally V.F.D.” We have got to get out of Paltryville right away! We’ll leave on the train tomorrow. I’ll call Dr. Orwell and tell her that I caught whatever you had Duncan, and you say that you’re still sick. Isadora then you’ll tell her that you need to stay home and take care of Duncan. At ten twenty sharp we’ll all meet in the train station. Everyone got that?”
“Yes,” said Isadora,” But we’ll need to disguise ourselves. You can disguise yourself right now Nina, but Duncan and I will have to wait until tomorrow.”
“What should I be?” asked Nina.
“There is a manual in the kit with plenty of ideas, but if our quote unquote Auntie G was in V.F.D. she may recognize the disguise. We’ll have to make one up” Isadora said as she looked over the list of materials,” It says that there has been no use for the beige coat yet so maybe you can use that.”
“Maybe, I should use this blond wig,” said Nina seeming to talk to everyone and no one in her cheerful voice,” Then I could use this dark red lipstick and wear these sensible pants.”
“It’s time for a makeover!” yelled Isadora excitedly.
***
When the Quagmires had finished giving Nina Nelly a makeover she looked completely different from the woman they had met the first day they moved here. She had bright, braided, blond hair with an extremely dark color of lipstick. She wore a pair of sensible pants with a shirt that she had never worn from her own closet. Over this shirt she wore the medium-length beige coat. Nina also found an old purse in her closet that was perfect for the false family member pictures and money that Dr. Orwell hadn’t spent.
“Thank you Quagmires,” said Nina cheerfully crying,” Without you I would be dead by now.”
***
The next morning the two triplets carried out the plan and in yet another fake voice Auntie G agreed. The Quagmires then disguised themselves. Duncan wore the overalls and running shoes. On his head he wore a ski mask that he had brought with him. Isadora used the hair coloring to make her hair look as though she was a red-head with black highlights; she also wore a bright pink lipstick that also happened to be in the kit. She wore the sunglasses and the pinstripe suit with formal shoes.
“We better make up some aliases” said Duncan as the Quagmires walked to the train station with luggage in hand,” Why don’t I be Harold Porter.”
“Oh!” said Isadora,” why don’t I be Debbie Porter. Wait, who should Nina be?”
“She could act as our mother,” said Duncan being inspired,” She’ll be Mrs.-“
“Sandra Porter!” interrupted Nina seeming to come out of no where,” Hi. I’ve been behind you two the whole time.”
“Hey look,” said Duncan interrupting the awkward pause,” there’s the train station!”
The rest of the way to the station was quiet except for some discussion about where the group would go, but it was decided that they would travel to Tedia. The Quagmires had a cousin there and he was always nice to them. The Quagmires finally thought that they would be lucky but sadly they were more wrong that anyone could comprehend.

Chapter 8
One word, betrayal. I have faced it, my brother has faced it, and the Quagmires would soon face it.
“That’s strange,” said a voice from behind the Quagmires that made them stop in their tracks,” That case you’re holding seems to say property of Georgina Orwell, but neither of you are me. I don’t seem to remember lending my disguise kit to anyone especially two children, who look remarkably like the orphans that I volunteered to free from danger.”
“Quick kids get on the train!” yelled Nina throwing their train tickets to them,” I’ll take care of Dr. Orwell. Just go!”
“I don’t think so,” said Dr. Orwell in the most evil voice the Quagmires had ever heard as she grabbed the disguised siblings before they could run,” You’ll never be able to escape me!”
Nina feared for her life, but knew that it was the triplets only hope. Without a word Nina gave Dr. Orwell a swift kick right in the shin.
“Ahhh!” screeched Dr. Orwell as lifted her focus from the orphans to her now throbbing shin.
“Hurry kids!” screamed Nina,” We have to get on the train!” Without anything except a few grunts the group hurtled to the train.
“I’ll get you Quagmires!” hollered Dr. Orwell,” I’ll get you yet!”
***
One hour later the Quagmires and Nina were in their seats and on their way to Tedia. The Quagmires had fallen asleep and so had Nina or so they thought.
“Nin to G. Nin to G. Do you read me?” said Nina into a walky-talky she had pulled out of her purse,” Am proceeding with plan 833. The orphans expect nothing!”
“Excellent!” came a voice over the walky-talky,” proceed with the plan.”
Nina then grabbed the orphans without waking them and put them on a cart and then put a blanket over the cart. Nina pushed the cart to the caboose of the train. She opened the door, and broke down the protective railing. She took the Quagmires off the cart and placed them on the platform with no protective railing.
“Say goodbye Brats!” She yelled,” No I’ve got to save the Quagmires. You stay out of this. I can’t let them die. Of course you can. No I can’t. Yes you can. No I-.” Before she finished Isadora had woken up and realized the situation,” Help me Isadora!”
“Nina?” yelled Isadora over the roar of the train,” What’s going on?”
“Your death, that’s what’s going on!” screeched Nina,” Isadora, I can’t fight this voice trying to control me. You have to escape while I’m still in control, and run,”
“Duncan, wake up!”
“That’s no use your brother is out cold. Grab him and run Isadora!”
Isadora grasped Duncan by his arm and sprinted to the first unoccupied room she could find. She fiddled with the latch and finally locked the door just as the anti-Nina reached her.
“Your time has come orphan!” yelled Nina’s alternate self.

Chapter 9
SMASH! The frosted glass of the window in the cabin door shattered and there stood Nina with a fist gushing blood. She was acting as if she had multiple personalities, but now it seems as though her evil personality had taken over. When Isadora realized this she had to shout.
“Nina,” she yelled,” I know your still in there,” The imposter had climbed through the window and was slowly creeping toward Isadora and her unconscious brother,” You have to fight this!” It came closer,” You can do it,” Closer,” The battle is not over yet!” The thing inhabiting Nina came to a stop. It then proceeded to faint.
“Of course!” exclaimed Isadora,” She was hypnotized! There must have been a code word in the last thing I said. The? Battle? Is? Not? Over? Yet?” As soon as she said the last word. Nina woke up and began her slow creep once again,” Yet!” hollered Isadora and once again Nina stopped in her tracks.
“Isadora,” Nina managed,” Thank you. If it hadn’t been for you I would have become a murderer, but my hand is bleeding way too much and I have little time left. Watch out for Dr. Orwell. She will not give up on you until your either dead or she has your fortune. If you happen to meet a man named Olaf beware for he is even more dreadful then Dr. Orwell. V.F.D. means volunteer…” Before she could tell the Quagmires the secret she fainted because of the lack of blood.
“Isadora!” cried Duncan in a worried tone,” Why is Nina on the floor?”

Chapter 10
“Duncan, Isadora?” said Nina still very weary from her massive blood loss,” Are you okay?”
“Nina!” yelled Isadora in the happiest tone of voice she had had since before the loss of her parents as she bound over to Nina and gave her the biggest hug she could manage,” Thank goodness you’re still alive! You punched the window in your hypnotized state and almost died.”
“I’m so happy you’re still here,” said Duncan still shedding a few tears,” Good thing the engineer saw you and gat a doctor in here to take care of you.”
“Where is he?” she asked,” I want to thank him for saving me.”
“I’m the doctor,” said a man with one eyebrow in a wheezy voice,” You lost quite a lot of blood, Nina.”
Nina’s eyes grew very wide,” What is your name doctor?” she said in a frightened voice.
“Why my name is Julius,” the doctor said as Nina gave a sigh of relief.” Julius Olaf.”
Nina let out a shriek of terror and stood up. She then sprinted to the back of the train. She made a running jump out of the train and onto the tracks below. As she jumped she yelled one last sentence,” So long Quagmires, and there is a survivor of your fire it is-,” Before she finished she had landed and could not be heard over the roar of the train, but two words were heard,” BEWARE OLAF!”
Duncan and Isadora both realized that the reason that she had committed that crazy act was because the doctor that had been treating her was named Olaf.
A look of terror arose from both the Quagmires faces,” run,” whispered Isadora. Without one more word the Quagmires went into a dead sprint toward the door, but they triplets were cut off by a familiar face, the face that would haunt them for most of their young lives. That face was the face of their “dear” Auntie G.
