Esme seemed too wicked not to be a henchman. Of course, I expected Nero to be a henchman in TAA, which was sort of the case in TPP. I realized that it was Hooky once they mentioned sleeves. The fact that he all but told them exactly what was going on made me think that there was something special about Hooky, which was then revealed in TGG.

But I couldn't see Esme on TEE cover of Russian edition. Anyways, I have never found her to be nice, even when Baudelaires first met her.

I remember being somewhat suspicious of Esme when I first read it, but didn't begin to think that she was in cahoots with Olaf until the elevator incident. The doorman, though, came as a complete surprise to me.

I first suspect about the doorman when Lemony said that they never could see his hands. This same enphasis was in TRR, so I wasn't that surprised. But with Esme, I did.

I never suspected the doorman- but I was suspicious of Esme. The British cover clearly shows this. And also due to Handler/Snicket's description of her and her actions we are inclined to dislike her
