One of my favourite websites featured the Baudelaires today, Jew or Not Jew, here: jewornotjew.com/profile.jsp?ID=981They'd previously profiled Daniel Handler, but this marks the first time a character(s) from the books was profiled. For anyone curious, they are scored on a scale of 0 to 15, with 15 being a very high Jew Score, and 0 being, well... There are three categories of scoring: The I score, which refers to Jewish heritage, the O score, which refers to how "Jewish" someone acts or expresses themselves, and the K score, which is how proud the website is to have them be Jewish. So, a Jew score of 12 is quite good. Well done, orphans!

How fascinating! Though slightly perplexing. The Baudelaires seem to have more Jewish heritage than actions?

I think their actions could be read as Jewish, because they value family togetherness, they are resourceful, and they become quite adept at surviving horrible perils, which are considered quite Jewish traits. Plus, aside from Sunny, who only has a few hairs in the illustration and therefore can't really be said to be brunette yet, Violet and Klaus are dark-haired and have fair-to-olive complexions, so it could be argued that they look a wee bit Jewish in a non-stereotypical fashion.

That's interesting....^^ I knew Lemony himself was Jewish, but the Baudelaires were never really depicted that way in the books....... Also, One of Handler's parents (can't remember which) was Jewish. Is Daniel Handler himself religious at all?

Daniel Handler is actually a secular humanist.

DH is certainly involved in Jewish community activities and sometimes goes to a synagogue, and has referred somewhere to his keeping the Yom Kippur fast.

Interesting. There is a mention of the Jewish celebration, Bat Mitzvah, in THH in the Library of Records.

I would say that the Baudelaires are ethnically Jewish, but non-religious.

I agree. Just because someone doesn't follow a set faith it doesn't mean they have no ethics.

Judaism has a long history of ensuring that Jewish ethics survive outside of a religious context though. Just ask Albert Einstein ("My religion consists of a humble admiration of the illimitable superior spirit who reveals himself in the slight details we are able to perceive with our frail and feeble mind.") or Baruch Spinoza ("I do not know how to teach philosophy without becoming a disturber of established religion.")

I can't remember where I read this but Handler said in an interview somewhere that he is Jewish and therefore the majority of his characters automatically are.
