I think we maybe do let Monty off a bit too easily, simply because he was the first nice guardian that the Baudelaires had. However, he did seem to be a bit too wrapped up in himself - and he didn't even consider the possibility that the children were telling the truth.

Come to that, Dr. Montgomery is a little bit misunderstood in the other direction. He's actually a bit of an idiot. He neither listens to nor takes seriously the Baudelaires' concerns about Stephano because he's too focussed on his own self-centred conspiracy theory about the man. I agree. I find him overpraised. Jerome too. In my opinion Jerome isn't not much better( at least in TEE) than Mr Poe. I am have a problem with his suggestion to forget Quagmires, especially considering that they were kidnapped because of Baudelaires. Hal is underrated. He was very protective of Baudelaires in TPP, despite not knowing them much and them lying to him.

I think the most misunderstood character is probably Count Olaf. What made him the way he is? Is it because the Baudelaire parents killed his parents at the opera? From TBL, it sounds like he was rather sinister even when he was in school. What were his parents like? What was his childhood like? There is no excuse for his despicable behavior and murderous ways, but it would be interesting to know more about what made him tick.
