bryan i have now finished the main evangelion episodes, have yet to watch the film the psychoanalytic/philosophical discussion in the last few episodes was unexpected which i enjoyed! it was also cool that how switched up the narrative and animation styles (though i'm also aware this was partly due to a lack of budget?)
the one gripe i have with it though is that i think they zoom so far out on those last two episodes that you sort of lose sight of the characters themselves and their own peculiarities? i guess that's kind of the point, that these are universal themes of the human experience, but it becomes kind of vague & i'm left wondering if the story up until that point even called for an ending like that, like maybe it feels a little out of place or unwarranted?

penne oooh totally fair. Even though I enjoyed it I remember being so thrown off by those episodes because I did like the characters so much and felt cheapened out of a "real" ending for them. especially asuka lol. so the fact that you were so responsive to it is cool! The themes are universal but also I feel like it centers Shinji sometimes? Idk, it's just human instrumentality at work baby B-) Congratulations on making it this far! oh also are you watching it in english or is there a Portuguese dub?

actually one more thing wrt the female characters (maybe we should make a separate thread lol) so the show is v overtly interested in psychoanalysis to the point where it's like it seems they wrote the characters based on something freud wrote... this i mostly enjoyed but it can be hit or miss... it can simplify the characters' motivations (everyone is driven by mommy and daddy issues)
where this irked me MOST was with ritsuko... now tell my why the hell my girl had an affair with gendo... it really threw me, like it came out of nowhere??? she's humiliated and for WHAT

lol that's sooo valid like Gendo is not all that. After you find out about her mom, her behavior in that regard is almost comical. I also felt like Misato's relationship with sex almost felt a little bit reductive to her overall character. I don't fully agree with all the Freudian analysis. There's a lot of focus on sexuality in the show and in regards to the women it can feel overdone, like you said, random shots of their bodies. But there's also some like meta commentary there I guess. Idk if it was the same in the japanese dub/portuguese sub but in the "next episode" previews that Misato narrates there would be jokes like "there'll be plenty of fan service!!" So the show at least knows what they're doing?? Idk if that makes it less problematic but overall Evangelion tries, I think, to engage with the immaturity of, and objectification perpetuated by, its own audience.

also yeah asuka rules. I thought she was annoying at first but I was judgmental and her mental breakdown is a bit iconic. now watch the movie >: |

Series finale of HBO's Barry
I still think Season 4 was a mistake, and it would have made a perfect 3-season show, but I still liked some aspects of S4, such as Fuches' character arc at the end. I also like that the show ended on an acidly satiric note rather than a purely dramatic one. They really nailed that balancing act between comedy and drama until the end.

Poe's Coats Host Toast i only just learned that Assayas made a miniseries of Irma Vep last year. **A SERIAL REMAKE OF A FEATURE ABOUT A FEATURE REMAKE OF A SERIAL.** it might be the most meta BS in cinematic history, lmao i've watched the first episode, it's kinda awkward and OA has clearly got a sapphic kink, but i will eat this up anyway obviously

Oh dang, I've heard about this a while ago and then forgot about it! I like the meta aspect, lol. And I liked the lesbian tension of the movie, and that it was never consummated... Hope the show doesn't break away from that. Definitely gonna give it a try, and I'm guessing I'll watch the whole thing. Thanks for reminding me!

i've watched it all now. there was a whole lot of cringing and scoffing on my end, but also a lot of grinning and cackling. it's definitely Assayas' funniest work. much more of a thematic playground than a stylistic one, but it probably would have ended up in, like, Iñarritu territory otherwise. and there's no point pretending he could bring back the 90s indie rawness either. (that would kind of defeat the whole concept.) the adaptation-within-the-adaptation looked like Baz Luhrmann though.... *mirthless lol*
