Be wary about the page numbers given on websites - they rarely know for certain, and their estimates can range from close to flat wrong. You raise a good point about the font, though; I count 2,254 words in this chapter and 1,497 for the first chapter of TBB. If the font is the same size as TBB, the first chapter would have to be over eight and three quarter pages long (counting the first page as a half and the last as a quarter). Thirteen pages, to be exact, if we assume 171 words per page. While that just so happens to work out nicely, I think I agree with you that the font will be reduced to a more typical size. With only four novels, we might also expect longer installments from each.

The writing style is rather different, but clever too. Upon rereading the chapter I noticed other subtle nods to the identity of his parents, etc. Perhaps "a word which here means" was simply a VFD trait which young Lemony picked up. Teenage Lemony also seems quite unaware of the schism, but that could just be because it's only the first chapter. So, will the whole series be about the theft statue (that's what was implied in the opening paragraph)?

The theft of a statue is only the first novel, I take it. The rest will center around different conflicts. As for the schism: It will have happened some time ago, would it not, taking TPP's dating, so Lemony might already be conscious of it to the point that it's normality. Indeed, he's not too shocked by the fact the tea is poisoned; he simply comments on the consequences he might have experienced should he have drunken it.

I agree about the style: A little darker, a little more mature. Snicket's quite different as a first person narrator. In ASOUE, we got glimpses of his life, and now that we have an extended series it's as though these glimpses are stretched into the full story. We know now where Lemony got his "which here means" habit. It read to me as if he were responding sarcastically to Theadora by using her turn of phrase, rather than have invented it himself. Theadora herself is not only straightforward but also a bit of a hypocrite ( "Don’t repeat yourself. It’s not only repetitive, it’s redundant, and people have heard it before."). This is to a humorous effect, of course. Agreed! I was worried that the writing style of the new series was gonna be more aimed for younger kids than ASoUE was, but apparently it's quite the contrary. I love it! Also, I think when she was repeating herself it was not only for humorous effect, but she was testing Lemony if he would ask her why she was repeating herself while telling him not to, the same way he asked her why she didn't say "right now" when they were in a hurry. She wanted him to just accept that she is his chaperone. Like, I felt it was a dominance thing. And again: I loved the hell out of this first chapter!

“Don’t repeat yourself. It’s not only repetitive, it’s redundant, and people have heard it before. "
Love it. I also think it's adorable how Lemony tries to define a word in conversation. XD

One thing I'm wondering is if the fake parents knew that Lemony knew they weren't really his parents. I would say yes, but Lemony was kidnapped as a baby, right? And did he have any contact with his parents since he was taken to school? So were they just acting like his parents to throw of suspicions of Lemony, or just those of the people (well, person) around them?

Actually if you think about it, a lot has happened in this first chapter, more than usual first chapters in normal books. I like the style, it's really grown on me.

I agree with Brunch; I'm liking how fast-paced it is so far.

And did he have any contact with his parents since he was taken to school? So were they just acting like his parents to throw of suspicions of Lemony, or just those of the people (well, person) around them? I'd actually read the "parent" part of it as Dante had explained before; that is, the parents are villains posing as volunteers transporting Lemony to his next location. As for whether he had contact with his parents since school: the UA purposefully leaves this question blank, but Lemony still knows some basics about his parents. He's able to correct "The Snicket Lad" piece by mentioning his father never went by "Jake," for instance. So I'd imagine that, while Lemony may not remember his parents, he's learned about them through his work, or perhaps they maintain written correspondence. Somehow this information wasn't transmitted to Theadora, however. And this is only a sneak peek i believe Yes indeed. This is only the beginning to a tragic new series. I plan to take a closer look at the style Snicket is using here, actually. Reading this a second time, I've noticed a few things that are possible clues of the yet to come ...

I hope it gets translated to Portuguese soon, I want to gift it to my nephews and nieces.
Do you think it's going to be more mature than ASoUE?

It will be. The writing style and the story's a lot darker, what with the Laudanum and other stuff. I love this part as well. Pure genius. I plan to take a closer look at the style Snicket is using here, actually. Reading this a second time, I've noticed a few things that are possible clues of the yet to come ... And pray tell, what might those be?

It's the kind of style that once you read it the second time, you notice lots of other things you might not have picked out before.

Sometimes I think that I've found something, but most of the time I suspect I'm being paranoid.
