That reminded me of one of my favourite plays, Two Weeks With The Queen, when the main character, an Australian is talking to his English cousin, and making up all these amazing stories of daring adventures he's had, and says he once had to outswim sharks when he fell off a cliff into the sea. His cousin asks, impressed, "you can outswim sharks?!", to which he replies "all Australians can - wouldn't be any of us left if we couldn't".

Also, arduous is a simply fantastic word. I'll have to use that in a novel. Speaking of novel words, can anybody think of another word for sad (kinda). Like melancholy, despair, grief. Something like that.
