These are kinda disgusting, no? Like it literally encourages youth to shoot people to death. Basically war training I guess.
What are your thoughts on shoot 'em ups like Call of Duty etc.?

When you said this I thought you were talking about heroin.
Violent video games can be good stress relievers. Pretty sure studies have shown that they don't actually correlate with real violent behavior

I agree with Sophie. My ex-stepbrother being the exception, however. He once broke my PS2 controller after having a go at Grand Theft Auto.

Yeah, "it literally encourages youth to shoot people to death" is probably something even my grandma would disagree with.

What are your thoughts on shoot 'em ups like Call of Duty etc.? the main thing i think about ultra realistic violent games like this is what we really need is a good ratings system, like no banning of games but there are definitely games that should be restricted to adults. also parents really need to give a salsa.

while i'm not sure if they actually make people more aggressive, i do think shooting videogames help disensitize people to violence and death, which is a problem, imo. i saw this interview with mike white once, and he said something i like that sort of relates to this: "obviously our movies and entertainment and tv do have an influence on the violent culture that we have and unfortunately live in today. it's important for us to at least consider what kind of values we are putting out there. i think it's funny when people point to the positive things in the ways entertainment has instructed and taught us- we are very quick to take credit for those things, but when it's seen as negative, we say 'oh, it's just a movie, it has no influence!', and i just think that's naive." he makes some really good points, you can watch all of it here, i recommend it.

Truffaut famously said that it's impossible to make a true anti-war film (paraphrase), because to show the violence "is to ennoble it." And numerous films (arguably all of them) like Platoon or The Wild Bunch have failed in that respect, even though both examples are still great movies.
I for one think that adults (and most teenagers) are very much conscious of the difference between reality and the world in a movie, and any violent inclinations that are revealed were already there to begin with. Not only that, but people who act out on those violent impulses would've acted out on them whether or not they've played a video game or seen a movie. All such media does at most is make them creative, so to speak, if you think of copycat crimes, like f.ex. the ones following the release of A Clockwork Orange.
But this is why, like Sam said, age restrictions are important and should be taken seriously.

regardless of adults being able to make a distinction between the real world and movies, i do find it problematic that violence is so widespread in popular entertainment, and whether we like it or not, constant exposure to that must have some sort of subconscious effect on people, even if just to numb them out to it. and i don't think we should be numb or apathetic towards violence.
to bring the discussion back to videogames, one of my main concerns about them in general is that, with a lot (if not most) of them, violence is the only means of communication the player has with the game world. i myself have played and enjoyed videogames that are violent and graphic, but i would be reluctant to say it's 100% healthy and there were times when the senseless killing weirded me out a bit. and i don't think that their being "good stress relievers" is a good argument in their favor, as there are healthy and unhealthy ways to relieve stress, and, in my experience, videogames can be quite stressful.
this is not to say i think we should eliminate violence in all forms of entertainment, in fact, i'm not quite sure what should happen (if anything at all), but i don't think we should deny that it has its effects on how we think violence.

heey, i recently played a really great little rpg called "undertale" (some of you may have heard of it or played it yourselves) and it deals with the issue of violence in videogames in a wonderful way, while still being exciting and fun. really recommend it, if anyone's interested!!

"exciting and fun"? The gameplay seems lame af. But then again, I'm not a fan of rpg's, so I'm not unbiased.

"exciting and fun"? The gameplay seems lame af. But then again, I'm not a fan of rpg's, so I'm not unbiased. it can be really engaging once you know the story and the characters involved. the "battles" are actually a lot more interactive than in most other games of this sort out there, and there are also some cool puzzles to solve throughout. part of its appeal does come from trying to pursue the "true pacifist" route, which means not killing any enemies, and that becomes more and more challenging, since you never get to level up. it also has a pretty great soundtrack to boot. sure, it can be a little repetitive, but if you enjoy games like "pokemon", that shouldn't be a problem for you. of course, that's just my opinion anyway
