I mean, hip hop is the most popular genre in the world as of 2017. I think the ship has sailed on white people appropriating Black music and there are actual current day artists that could really use a spotlight shined on them a lot more than Elvis. People like Post Malone and Lil Dicky disrespect the culture and get a pass from the mainstream. At least people acknowledge that it was problematic when Elvis did it.

i love how neil young says, "she got pictures on the wall, they make me look up"
i do not, however, love that he says "big brass bed."

probably got influenced by bobby d's "lay lady lay" chorus (1969 vs "out on the weekend"'s 1972 release date)

yeah, that's why i don't love it. although bobby d himself was copying blind willie mctell - rough alley blues.

i dont see the problem. both folk and blues songs have a tradition of reusing imagery and phrases from other songs.

it makes songwriting a more social, collective effort that is at the core of a lot of folk music for the workin' man, rather than the act of a solitary person proclaiming their genius. same thing with fairy tales and probably the oral tradition of poetry.

i should say that i don't like it applied to pop music as if it were a part of "the tradition." of course i understand that formulaic language and the copying, rearranging, or otherwise recycling of melody and lyric are an essential part of oral composition. but when dylan or the neiler slip in a line or two from the "tradition", then it just becomes a reference, and i'm always disappointed to discover that, especially when it's a great phrase like "big brass bed."
