The changes are minor but the additions are sizable. The idea was to bring forward certain events and ideas lurking in the background of the books.
In adapting the books, has Count Olaf taken over the story?
One of the pleasures of working with Mr. Harris is that his eye is on the story, not just his own performance. Of course, one has no control over the perceptions of an audience, but all of us were concerned with telling the story of the Baudelaires and their pursuit by Count Olaf, not using the story as a vehicle for anything else.We've heard pretty much the same things before, but I'm glad the changes aren't big and I'm happy for lots of additional scenes because, well, that's more ASOUE! Also very pleased that they are focusing properly on the Baudelaires. I wasn't particularly worried, but there has been a great deal of emphasis on Olaf so its nice to be reassured about the Baudalaires. Also, I LOVE this part because I totally agree with DH about children's literature being a genre, not an age restriction: But I’ve always seen children’s literature as a genre, not as a prescription for the age of the reader, the same way you don’t have to be a detective to read a mystery. The Netflix adaptation is for people who might be interested in such a thing.
Also interesting to see mentions of Kit, Jacques, and Beatrice. |

Also, I'll of course be aiming to watch the show ASAP tomorrow but that ASAP might mean some time in the afternoon because I have to go out in the morning to buy art stuff because I can't do it any other day but I just want to be at home watching ASOUE and it's all quite tragic -- appropriately so, I suppose. A very frustrating dilemma.

When Handler talks about the additions merely being things that "bring events to the forefront," it will really make me feel better about such things while watching the show. It changes the feel tremendously - it stops being a new, unwelcome subplot, akin to a fakeout, and instead becomes something that was true all along in the background of the books, but is now being shown in the main story. I think, with that mindset, I'll be just fine. 🙃 Totally agree. I also think ASOUE is a series uniquely suited to an adaptation which 'brings events to the forefront' because there's already so much intrigue, confusion, and mystery. We already know of many tiny subplots, many more briefly-mentioned events, etc. And we know that there are so many mysteries we only glimpse, or don't even glimpse at all, but we just get the sense that they MUST be out there. So bringing some of those mysteries to greater prominence is very much in line with the series, and doesn't feel like they're actually changing things. |

Also I just got to see that piano clip and it's absolutely brilliant (an appropriate word for TRR, I feel) -- just right for ASOUE.

The piano gag itself is very Unauthorized Autobiography. The music was really quite good too, it was subtle but very atmospheric. I'm really looking forward to tomorrow, I've been waiting since 2004 for more Lemony Snicket, finally it's here and with great reviews at that! |

Yes, very TUA. It could slot right in. I know! There was a long time when I simply didn't think they would do any other adaptations ... I'm so glad they have and from the looks of it, it's got just the right tone.

I was worried about the musical aspect, but I clearly had no reason to! I'm also glad NPH isn't singing in character.
I'm having a lot of fun with the pause button. "Aged by a life of villainy" is a highlight for me, since I believe Olaf's age has always been a point of discussion. The map of the City is also really nice.
I love translation, and I appreciate that they've put in the effort to keep the rhymes (even if the Danish version only approximately rhymes, but it does sound like a challenge to translate). I'll be browsing the different translations for a little while. That being said, I really hope I can get English subtitles for the show. Much of the humour and code just can't be properly translated.
Is anyone else getting a slight Gravity Falls vibe from the opening? Quite apart from the illuminati symbol, of course.
I'm getting the feeling that the clips (and maybe the lyrics?) might change between episodes, or at least between books. These all seem to be from episode one, anyway, though that could just be to avoid spoiling too much.

That Handler interview is informative even when it isn't. I agree with his views on children's literature, and was anyone else feeling kind of nostalgic about the Beatrice answer?
I'm going to watch in the morning rather than at midnight, so I can binge sans tiredness if I want to, though I'll have to take an hour out of my day to get some singing practice in, which I'll do first, so I won't be watching as soon as I wake up. I'd take tomorrow off, but my wood floors are being redone on Monday, so that's a way more logical break day.
Maybe I'll set aside ten minutes of the hour and learn the theme song!!!
