- reggae sometimes (like rastafari's more fundamentalist branches, which can be infamously homophobic, sexist, and racist)

i signed up for a WWII class this year because i wanted to discuss european political history, but my fellowstudents are like 90% Trump supporters who know all the machine gun names.

I'm going to post this thing from an alternative category: "things you don't like with great fans" Firefly I'm simultaneously flattered on behalf of myself and offended on behalf of a great show that deserved several more seasons. I think my overall verdict is that this is a pretty sweet (but ambivalently sweet? Bittersweet?) notion.

I feel very similarly about firefly, though I only watched the 1h pilot a few years ago
The mix of western and sci-fi is pretty cool actually, but the humour was meh for me, I think, and the characters were too TV-like. I enjoyed Cowboy Bebop more; saw maybe half the series.

Well, I can't blame you for not getting hooked on the pilot. It took me a good three or four episodes to start caring much about the show (at which point I was about thirdways through it), and what I did like was pretty much the plot threads it seemed to be setting up, so really I like the show for what it clearly could have been. I really enjoy the halfway sitcom-humorous, halfway life-or-dead who-can-you-trust relationships between the characters - it's so often tense and dramatic, but since they only have each other, they can still believably joke around with and find solace in each other.
I'm not crazy about the theme song, either, except for its connotations of "Hey, an episode of Firefly is about to start". But then, the only westerns I tend to like are the ones that shows awareness of the genre and plays on its tropes. The show does that very succesfully in my opinion, but the theme song just plays it straight.

Agreed on scifi + western being a cool match. Cowboy bebop was lit too, actually watched it on your recommendation!
