I also love the comment he makes about how he has "finaled on all formats the movie as I intend it." Sounds like there's a Director's Cut just sitting around somewhere in Paramounts vaults if that's the case. Very very interesting. If I may ask, what would "on all formats" mean exactly? Is it that everything, including VFX, is completed or that Silberling made copies of his cut in multiple video formats?

If I may ask, what would "on all formats" mean exactly? Is it that everything, including VFX, is completed or that Silberling made copies of his cut in multiple video formats? Honestly, I'm not sure. It could mean that everything as far as VFX, Music, Sound, etc. was done (which honestly, I believe is true considering all the deleted completed VFX shots that appear in trailers, TV Spots, and the unreleased deleted scenes) but he could also mean multiple formats such as digital, 35mm film print, etc. No way to know for sure. I will say though that I think there's a far greater chance of a finished or 90% finished Director's Cut existing for the 2004 film, than there was for something like the recent "Snyder Cut". In the case of the Snyder Cut. Snyder had an edit of the film, but VFX were not completed on many of the shots since he left well before the movie was released (he left around May of 2017 - the film released in October 2017). Snyder also didn't have the original intended score recorded yet. That's how early he had to leave. In the case of Snicket, they're talking about having two competing cuts in the clip that was shared a few posts ago and the date burned into the edit is November 12th. The final film came out only a month later on December 17th. By that timeframe, a large majority of the VFX would be finished as there still needs to be time to make all the 35mm film prints for distribution and finalize the sound mix, etc. Thomas Newman's score had also wrapped recording by this point as well (The last session was on November 2nd). I do want to specify that the actual footage of a test screening we see at the end of The Unsound Sound Designer featurette is not from the November cuts. That footage is from September 1st and has many unfinished VFX shots as well as a demo version of "Loverly Spring" and temp music instead of the final score. So two cuts for sure exist from around Nov 12th: Brad's cut and the Studio cut. These would theoretically be basically finished and would have 5.1 temp sound mixes. What it seems like happened is the final film is a mesh of both of those cuts, just from looking at the Puttanesca scene. The white-faced women moment is still missing from the final film, but the slap is in the final film. So it seems like they meshed the two versions together for the final product we got. I honestly don't think it would cost nearly as much money on Paramount's part to release the Director's Cut. Perhaps they'd have to do some conforming and match any final sound mix fixes or perhaps there are a small couple of shots with rougher VFX, but this wouldn't be a $70 million investment like the Snyder Cut was for WB. They would save distribution money as well if they just put it up on their streaming platform, as much as I'd prefer to have it as a hard copy. I am doubtful we'll ever see another cut though unfortunately. Paramount seems to regard this film as a failure and seem interested in only doing the bare minimum with it. That's what comes across to me at least. Plus, I get the perception that the film is somewhat looked down on by the general public, especially now that the Netflix series exists. Who knows though. Maybe something will happen on the films 20th or 25th Anniversary or something.

Maybe something will happen on the films 20th or 25th Anniversary or something. It could very well be nothing of course, but Brad Silberling did leave this intriguing comment under one of Daniel Handler's Instagram posts roughly three months ago. So there's a slight chance they might be planning something for the movie's anniversary this year.

Hi! Nothing big (literally) — I have no idea where this image comes from, but it looks like it's from the Briny Beach sequence. Is Violet thinking over her invention? I could easily see a shot like this connecting Violet tying up hair and that unused shot of Violet walking down the beach/picking up the perambulator wheel.

I don't think I've ever seen this photo before. Thanks for sharing!

I don't think I've ever seen this photo before. Me neither! I actually found it on a costumer's fan site — the small resolution makes me think it was probably used for online promotions or something of that sort. Makes you think how much might have been lost just because people didn't think of archiving these sorts of things...

The old IMDB forums all got deleted and barely any of the Lemony Snicket threads got saved which is a pity as they had tons of things like test screening reports and reviews of the original script drafts that are now gone forever.

Ugh. I would commit several minor acts of disturbance of the peace to see some of that material. Anything specific you remember?

Wasn't sure where else to put this, but I finally have some exciting news!
I am in contact with someone that might be able to help me get my 35mm copy of the Lemony Snicket trailer scanned to a digital format with the full expanded picture and sound, possibly even in 4K.
Watch this space! It will likely take a month or so to get everything arranged, have it shipped, scanned, and returned.

if you watch closely Violet was beginning to invent something, but it appears she is stopped by noticing Count Olaf's boat: [/span] I wonder if this was changed in the reshoots.[/quote] Looking at this again, I think that Violet's actually holding two different things in these shots! Look at how she's able to hold that reflective object (a mirror?) with one hand in the top image, but she's using two hands to hold the bucket in the bottom image. They probably did film all of Violet's inventing a signalling device, and then just had to cut it for time.

All, a little update on that 35mm Trailer I shared images of.
I have begun talks with a restoration and scanning place. I might be able to get this scanned in very high resolution and retaining the full film negatives image sometime this year! Once the scan is complete, I will let you guys know.
Very exciting!
