It has to be somewhere near the coast of the USA or an inland lake. I say this because the Baud's toke regular trips by themselves to the beach and they could easyly see it from Esme's flat, which is the same town as their birthplace.

Well, talk about Lemony Snicket irony! We don't even know what "the city" is called. BTW, is "the city" the only city in Snicketland? There's a lot of towns and villages , but is there only one city? The thing is, I doub we'll ever find out, because that's how the humor goes lol.

The Bauds don't live in Europe. Nor do they live in North America. I say this because in TMM Klaus mentions about a place in England...so you don't say: "I read about a place in England" if you were already in England.
I also don't think Europe because Jerome says, "After all Violet, Galileo cae from a country in Europe, and invented the telescope. Would you be afraid of him?" So, if you were in Europe you wouldn't be a xenophobe and be afraid of a man in ur own continent.
On the same page Jerome said to Sunny, "The sharp toothed mountain lion can be found in a number of countries in North America" so I don't think Jerome would've said that either...
Also, if they lived in Europe they would fly to Peru and not sail...as they were going to do in Book the Second.
Oh, and whoever said Italy and France weren't foreign countries to each other were wrong. As long as they are a seperate community then they are foreign. In the United Kingdom, anywhere outside, England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland is foreign. If you went to the Republic of Ireland it would be foreign.
I think that the Baudelaire's live in somewhere in Southern America, in a country like Cuba...because they'd be able to sail to Peru no bother. If you were in Brazil, you could drive to Peru...
