Fiction and poetry tend to be based more description and theme rather than research. In fanfiction, you should go back and read the source material(or atleast a summary of it)unless it's a parody, but with original fiction and poetry you don't really need research, although it can make for good inspiration, you just need to be able to write well. Anyway, I enjoy writing fanfiction, poetry, and short stories, and have some novels that I'm working on.

I think that just applies to journalistic writing and non-fiction, no? In fiction, research can be either useful or distracting, depending on the subject and the writer's priorities. My problem with research is definitely that it's mainly distracting- I get curious about some tiny niche detail and then go down a rabbit hole, when it could've probably just've been fact-checked later.
