Chapter 8
Esme's I Love Freaks outfit would make for a fun Halloween costume.
Her bloodthirsty/jealous side really shines through and it's kinda chilling how casual she is about having Lulu killed.

Chapter 9 I’d like to know more about the eyedropper decision. Even if Violet managed to build a roller coaster in a day, how would they read while on a roller coaster? Hooky later gets a backstory, but I wonder how Olaf’s other henchpeople were recruited. In other flashbacks Violet and Klaus are given ages, like how they were 10 and 8 during the lasagna contest mentioned in TAA.In the story about the train station they’re not given ages but are just said to be “very young.” I’m guessing this means under 8.

We know roughly what happened to the white faced women. I do wonder how HOIG got recruited.

Chapter 10 I’m not sure what’s worse, that this carnival is throwing people to lions or that people are eager to watch. Geraldine Julienne’s second appearance, although she’s still unnamed. The headline about Count Olaf not being Count Omar is a bit of a mouthful, although it is funny. The crowd mistaking Fernald for a freak is probably my favourite scene in this book.I do wonder if the HOIG was originally a carnival freak.

Chapter 11 King Lear is actually my favourite play. Considering that he’s already managed to fool people into thinking he’s an amputee, I’m surprised Olaf has never tried faking allergies before now. I’m also a little surprised that this crowd doesn’t consider the woman with dyed hair freakish.

Chapter 12 The scene of the Baudelaires comforting each other is strangely cute. Klaus saying that the mountains must be cold this time of year gives some evidence for my theory that the series takes place in February-March. I wouldn’t mind having Madam Lulu’s tablecloth. This is the first fire the Baudelaires helped start. Violet’s “at least we’re getting to the mountains” comment sounds like something Phil would say. Chapter 13 The last illustration with the Snowscout Guide is some good foreshadowing.

Chapter 10 Man, Esme doesn't even like Olaf calling the white-faced women "lovely."
I cracked up when the woman with dyed hair asked if this whole thing was legal.
Chapter 11 The short description of the "horrible crunching and ripping sound" lends itself to letting your imagination fill in the details. Quite a gruesome end for characters in this series.
I like how thorough Lemony searches for the fan belt, from searching the houses of the carnival visitors to scaling every inch of the rollercoaster. V.F.D. trained him well.
Chapter 12 Violet wonders aloud about the fan belt, matching the same pattern of how Lemony searched at the close of the previous chapter.
"Plath Pass" is a nice nod to poet Sylvia Plath.
The woman who runs the gift caravan and was "too worried about her precious figurines" is likely a VFD member, as later in TSS we learn that an important (and incriminating for the Sinister Duo) file is hidden in one of the figurines. She was probably trying to get the file to safety as the carnival burned down around her.
Olaf was taught the coded map stain as a little boy, and later in TGG we learn that Madame Lulu learned the code herself from Captain Widdershins, when they were both very young. A cool little connective thread that makes me love this series even more.
I'm curious if Olaf has ever been to the mountain headquarters. The context of the map scene kinda gives me the impression he didn't know, but I'm not sure.
Why look, the walkie-talkies from TBB make a cameo!
Chapter 13 The ending with the rope being severed and the caravan careening down the mountains while Olaf's car races off with Sunny to find the HQ is so cool.

That's an interesting idea.

Actually in TSS the Duo were planning to go burn the carnival because they said VFD hid a piece of evidence in one of the figurines sold there. I misspoke when I said it was a file (I had to look it up in the book). But Olaf beat them to it, of course. Whatever the evidence was, it was something separate from the Snicket File. My theory is that the seller was guarding the evidence at the time of the fire.
