Chapter 1 Interesting segway into this book’s setting, but I’d like to know more about how Violet relates to evaporation, Klaus to precipitation, and Sunny to collection. Esmelita sounds like a ship name. The Calagari fire must’ve gotten big. That’s the second time in this chapter that a shoe store has been brought up.

Chapter 2 I don’t like how he was written out of the show because it messes up Fiona’s arc, but Widdershins is kind of annoying. If the submarine collapsed, how much warning would the Bauds have? Those vintage diving suits are kind of creepy. In the situation with the octopus then he or she who hesitates is lost, but usually stopping to think is helpful. I guess Aunt Josephine’s fear of realtors wasn’t so irrational after all. Somehow the name Cookie fits Phil.

Those vintage diving suits are kind of creepy. Right? Those terrified me when I was a kid. Personal Thoughts: Book good, show bad. Seriously, they made every possible mistake in the show. Deleting Widdershins was stupid, but the real problem was how they thrust his character traits upon Fiona, up to and including having VIOLET be the one who says "or she". Olaf showed up far too early, but they got rid of his one good line and kept the stupid laughs. Fiona is shoved under a desk so that the Baudelaires go to the grotto alone -well, I say alone but Quigley shows up for no reason other than to give him and Violet a more satisfying ending- which means her characterization is shot. Phil is super annoying in the show, while in the books he was a refreshing breath of fresh air from the usual gloom. The Klaus/Fiona romance is wrecked, even as they try to expand Violet/Quigley, an action I can only presume comes from some of those rabid Fiona haters you can find in old threads getting hired by Netflix. The Great Unknown is just a big scary sea monster in this and I think that's wrong. Now, later canon definitely points to the Bombinating Beast being the Great Unknown. However, the characters of the show should not figure that out, it completely messes up The End! Of course, the show got confused and thought A Series of Unfortunate Events should have a happy ending, so clearly they're MORONS! (Ask me about my thoughts on the show during TPP, and I'll be much nicer. TGG's portrayal just retroactively ruins the entire rest of the show, especially if you're thinking about it.)

The book starts to lose my interest in the later half. The jokes and quirks in it start to grow tiresome.

I've always found TGG an interesting one. It is not as good as TSS, which is my favourite book, but it does do a really good job of complexifying (if thats even a word) the backstories of the characters, which i like a lot.
I can't comment about the show as I had long given up watching it by this point. I would say that, on paper at least, TGG is one of the most difficult books to adapt - a lot of it is people sat around talking about the plot, and any movement of characters or action is all underwater, which is not the easiest thing to put on screen. So I would expect any adaptation to be difficult.

Chapter 1 I'm curious to know what publication those scraps of paper were from. And how they'd be of enormous help to the Baudelaires.
A periscope with a VFD eye rising from the water would be slightly creepy.
Chapter 2 Captain Widdershins has seen the little neck door used on the helmets, so now I can't help imagining a bunch of VFD babies peeking through diving helmets.
It almost sounds like Josephine helped Widdershins come up with the submarine's nickname. And he patrolled Lake Lachrymose for years, so there must be an underwater tunnel connecting back to the sea.
Widdershins is a lot more energetic here than his younger self in ATWQ.
It's funny that Widdershins' alarm clock is malfunctioning, considering his name means "counterclockwise."
So Widdershins and Fiona were in Lake Lachrymose picking through the remains of Josephine's house before too much got soaked. I wonder if they rescued the copy of Ivan Lachrymose that had Part 2 of that VFD transcript. Lemony was on the shores of the lake (per his editor letter in TRR) checking the remains himself.
I remember theories way back that the submarine possibly rescued Josephine from the leeches. Obviously nothing came of it, but it was a fun notion at the time.
It's fun having Phil back for this adventure.
Interesting that Jacques and then Lemony served as the second crew member.

Chapter 3 Sunny as a pirate would be kind of funny. Imagine what Phil’s first day on the Queequeg was like if it made the lumber mill seem quiet. So did Phil leave Paltryville shortly after the Bauds did? I don’t know if I fully trust Widdershins. Again, those old diving helmets are already creepy, imagine how they must look shrouded in a green glow. I’m going to have to use the line about dangers they couldn’t imagine for 10 Years Later.

Chapter 4 What does a sheer pair of gloves even mean? Also, I’d think that best pair of gloves for blending into shrubbery would be made of leaves rather than any kind of fabric. I think fixing the steering mechanism should take priority. Somehow it’s pretty easy to picture Phil in an apron. Sunny’s chowder will give the crew a nice break from those awful casseroles. So Olaf has been cutting the phone lines, that’s still going to take a while. Olaf’s craft must’ve been absolutely terrifying to see up close.

I’m kind of mixed about this book. I’m a Kliona shipper and Fernald’s backstory is interesting. I think in any other book I’d find Phil annoying but here he’s a nice break from the doom and gloom and it’s cool to have him back. But on the flip side it’s kind of slow, Widdershins is annoying, and the nautical theme feels like a rehash of TWW.

I've been sick for the last several days and was afraid I'd get left behind on the discussion. Glad to see I don't have to speed-read a bunch of chapters.
Chapter 4 The phone line cutting has a connection to LSTUA in which a resident is duped by Olaf to chop down the telephone poles in his neighborhood.
This book was the one that taught me the word mycology.
My namesake appears! It's cool getting to delve more into the Anwhistle family, and later on we'll see what that "ancient history" was that Widdershins is purposefully avoiding.
I like how Snicket uses Plato's Cave Allegory to explain the sonar screen and the grand mysteries the Baudelaires face.

Chapter 5 Am I the only one in the galaxy who likes tapioca? Any of those GGs would be more pleasant than Gorgonian Grotto, well except for Grandma’s Gingivitis. Of course Phil would think that Medusa was secretly nice. Beverly Cleary reference. Another cliffhanger ending, love those.

Chapter 6 Widdershins has no idea how long this “short journey” will be or whether the Baudelaires will ever be able to take off/ climb out of their helmets. They’re pretty much his guinea pigs. So a citation for bravery is basically a participation trophy. The grotto must’ve been pretty interesting to explore back when it had a bit more lighting. When you think about it, goats are always armed regardless of their temperament. Chapter 7 Olaf having lice totally makes sense lol. I also don’t care for Row Row Row Your Boat. The Baudelaire parents yelling in the library not only gives them a bit of depth but is honestly pretty funny. Confirmation that Fiona fits Klaus like a glove. I love how it’s not specified which Baudelaire has the helmet with spores in it, leaving us hanging until the next chapter.
