This one is my favorite book. It's the most atmospheric, I think. The setting of Lake Lachrymose is both alien and recognizable, which makes the plot more impactful. Captain Julio Sham is Olaf's best disguise, easy. Unlike every other disguise, there's no good-faith way to reveal his tattoo. This book is also a good bit darker than I'd remembered, as it literally contains a suicide note. Speaking of that note, the secret code in it is great.

I have to agree that this is one of the darker entries. Also, I never thought about it until now but I think this book has my favourite cover art.

Chapter 1: Mr Poe has known these kids their entire lives and never remembers they’re allergic to peppermints? I can’t help but wonder if his forgetfulness is a little more sinister. Aunt Josephine’s house sounds both terrifying and kind of cool.

Chapter 2: How would the sofa just random fall over?I guess that’s Aunt Josephine for you. I never notice the contrast in sizes with the closet, window, and cans until now. Also, I wonder if the Baudelaires’ room was previously a storage area or guest room. I have a theory about why Ike and Josephine were afraid to have children. It’s on the iceberg I’m working on that I might post at some point. Just realized Ike Anwhistle sounds like “I can whistle.”Also, both Ike and Josephine are names of hurricanes. The view of the lake sounds amazing AF. I’d like to know where Aunt Josephine’s realtor-phobia came from.

Chapter 3: The pimple/bear comparison is strangely kind of cute. Making the Bauds cook was the least cruel thing Count Olaf did. I now have a mental image of Count Olaf trying to disguise himself with plastic wrap. Captain Sham calling Violet Veronica foreshadows what the Daily Punctilio would later call her. I love the last sentence of this chapter.

Chapter 4: I’m trying to picture the taste of lime stew. Also this brings back memories of when Anka was making a cake for 667’s bday and I suggested key lime in honour of the cold lime stew. Aunt Josephine:You can’t believe everything you read that says phones aren’t dangerous Also Aunt Josephine:Captain Sham is obviously not Count Olaf cause this piece of paper says so I wonder if the Verse has a Hopalong Dancing School or if that’s just something Violet thought up on the spot. Chapter 5 I like the Venus flytrap comparison.I’d forgotten about that. I also love the note the chapter ends on.”Aunt Josephine was not dead. Not yet.”

Chapter 6 Did Mr Poe already forget that he himself saw the unmasking of Stephano? The egg-laying dog thing is honestly kind of cute. Aunt Josephine did write the note herself, but she wrote it under duress so I don’t think that counts as a legal document.

Chapter 7: Is Mr Poe lactose intolerant? He specifically orders non-dairy creamer. Wow, Captain Sham isn’t a very good liar. The Anxious Clown is actually my least favourite location in the series, but it is kind of nice that the Baudelaires get some warm food.

Chapter 7: Is Mr Poe lactose intolerant? He specifically orders non-dairy creamer. He also orders a cheeseburger, so probably not.

I can't ever enjoy this book now, because the episodes of the netflix series kind of tainted it for me.

Chapter 8 I guess in the Snicketverse Minnesota’s a state but Arizona’s a country. I also guess Sunny’s learned to tolerate baths, since in TBB Violet says that she’ll bite really hard if anyone tries to give her one. Chapter 9 If there’s anything I’ve learned from my years of reading, it’s “Beware the single hanging lightbulb.” If you’re going to steal something to eat, how about food rather than a painting. Random observation:The youngest sibling always seems to be the bravest(Sunny, Ike, Lemony, I theorize Quigley).
