They did consider splitting it, yeah, which ... Idk, I can see why but I don't think it's the best book to split. I think it worked for Deathly Hallows, but for Goblet of Fire I think it would have really messed up the pacing even more than they already did.
It's an interesting question about the new series. I hope they'll do it in a way that simply gives good time to the source material, and doesn't get hung up on trying to follow a formulaic pattern of episodes.
